MOUNT WASHINGTON - Rain on one end and the Kentucky Derby on the other made it a short week for the Bullitt East Chargers, but that was just fine as the red and gold won a pair of games to move 17-6 overall with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

The red and gold finally got on the field on Thursday last week and turned back Franklin County 2-1 in a good pitcher’s duel. Then we no school on Friday on Oaks Day, the Chargers took the field at 11 a.m. and crushed Manual 10-0.

“It was short and sweet,” Bullitt East head coach Jeff Bowles said on Sunday.

Against Franklin County, Bullitt East got a combined five-hitter from pitchers Josh Stearns and Coulten Maupin for the tight victory. Stearns is coming off an appendectomy just before spring break and this was his first varsity outing of the season. He worked the first three innings before giving way to Maupin who allowed just two hits over the last four innings.

Franklin County’s only run came off a home run in the second inning. Maupin faced only nine batters over the last three innings.

Bullitt East covered that early home run when senior Cody Morris blasted an opposite field shot over the fence in the bottom of the second. The winning run then scored in the fourth inning when Austin Money was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Hunter Wood had singled to lead off inning.

On Friday, the Chargers hit the road to play against Manual, a team they had beaten 5-4 back on April 18.

“I wanted to see how we had progressed,” Bowles said of scheduling the same team twice during the regular season. “It’s a good measuring stick for where we stand now.”

Bullitt East made it a good showing, scoring at least once in each of the first four innings in rolling to the 10-0 victory in five innings.

Morris got the win on the mound as he allowed three hits with seven strike-outs and two walks.

The Chargers countered with ten hits including three off the bat of Maupin including a double. Wood, Trevor Gonzalez and Adam Howell each had a double while Howell finished with two hits.

Bullitt East played at Southern on Monday in a rescheduled district game and the schedule will also change on Friday when the team traveling into northern Kentucky to take on Covington Holmes at 6 p.m.
