Each year at least 443,000 people in the US die from smoking and secondhand smoke and 8.6 million suffer from smoking-caused illness.
In 2006, the Surgeon General reported there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Inhaling chemical compounds in tobacco smoke causes adverse health outcomes, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and DNA damage.
Even low levels of exposure to secondhand smoke can lead to a sharp increase in smoking related illness.
