SHEPHERDSVILLE - Last Friday turned out to be a good day for many in the Bullitt County hoops community as the Coaches’ Sixth Region awards were announced in the state’s largest newspaper.

Heading up the awards was Bullitt East head coach Chris Stallings who was named the Coach of the Year in the Sixth Region after leading his team to a 23-8 mark and a third-straight 24th District title. Stallings pulled together a team with only one returning starter and a group that lost top point guard Jessica Philpott late in the summer to a serious knee injury.

Stallings did that and has the Lady Chargers posed to make another run at a Sixth Region title, something they came up a game short of last year.

The long-time Bullitt East coach will also coach the Kentucky All-Stars in June as they take on Indiana.

On the Girls’ All-Sixth Region team, Bullitt Central senior Keoka Hilliard was voted the number two player in the region while Bullitt East senior Lindey Young was a spot behind in third. The Player of the Year in the Sixth Region was Central senior Brianna Averette.

Bullitt East junior Nikole Isabel and North Bullitt freshman Savannah Morrison were part of the second team as selected by the coaches.

On the boys’ side, the All-Sixth Region team had a very Bullitt East flavor with three of the Chargers voted into the top seven positions.

Charger sophomore standout Derek Willis was fourth in the voting of coaches while senior center Corey Washburn was fifth. Bullitt East’s leading scorer, senior Hayden Sweat, was slotted into the seventh spot.

Bullitt East sophomore Rusty Troutman and Bullitt Central’s Caleb Craddock were selected to the second team.

That is the best representation on the All-Sixth Region team for Bullitt County since the three schools moved into the Sixth Region in 2006.

The Sixth Region Player of the Year in the coaches’ voting was Western senior Ryan Taylor while last season’s Player of the Year, Jermaine Jackson of Iroquois, was second. Fairdale senior forward Josh Stroud was third in the voting.

Bullitt East boys’ head coach Troy Barr was second in the Sixth Region Coach of the Year voting after winning the award last season. Central’s Doug Bibby was the winner this season.
