Start a new habit at the annual Second Sunday

Your Health by Cynthia Brown

One in four adults engage in little or no regular physical activity according to an Office of Health & Human Services report in 2003. This fact is still a high concern today. 2S-Second Sunday can change that!

Increasing physical activity can cure or reduce many health problems we face in America. “Physical activity - whether it’s walking the dog or simply taking the stairs at work - is essential to good health,” HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson said. “We need to pay more attention to getting adequate physical activity and reversing the alarming rise in obesity that we’ve experienced nationally during the past decade.”

2S-Second Sunday can change that!

One in four adults either engage in a low level of activity or are never active at all. Regular leisure time physical activity consists of exercise, sports, or active hobbies that cause light sweating or a slight to moderate increase in breathing or heart rate occurring five or more times per week for at least 30 minutes each time.

Regular leisure time physical activity also could include a vigorous activity that causes heavy sweating or large increases in breathing or heart rate three or more times a week for at least 20 minutes each time.

Oh Yeah! 2S-Second Sunday can help you here too!

Employers be concerned! The data are compelling: More than one-quarter of health care costs are related to chronic diseases - such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Lack of physical activity, being overweight or obese, a poor diet, and substance abuse are each contributing factors to poor health and chronic diseases.

Workers with one or more chronic conditions average 2-4 times as many lost work days as employees with no chronic conditions. The indirect costs to employers of workers with poor health can be 2-3 times the direct medical costs.

2S-Second Sunday can change that!
