LEXINGTON - The trip to the Kentucky High School State Tennis Tournament was a short one for a pair of Bullitt East entries last week.

Lady Charger senior Makaela Knight, making her second trip in three seasons to the big show, was knocked out in her first match on Thursday at the University of Kentucky.

Taking on junior Emily Rizer of Lexington Catholic, Knight dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match. Rizer didn’t past next the next round as she lost to Meredith Laskey, the tournament’s overall number two seed, 6-2, 6-1.

Knight, who has committed to Bellarmine, qualified for the State Championships by reaching the semi-finals of the Eighth Region Tournament the previous week.

On the boys’ side, Bullitt East senior Matt Phipps and sophomore Reese Milburn competed in the doubles’ tournament that began at Lexington Sayre on Thursday. The Bullitt East pair dropped a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 decision to the top doubles team from Lone Oak, junior Bailey Orr and freshman Grant Hammons.

This was the second straight season for Phipps to play in doubles in the state tournament. It was the first trip to the big show for Milburn.

Phipps and Milburn had qualified for the state meet by reaching the semi-finals of the Eighth Region Tournament.
