SHEPHERDSVILLE - Special guests at Shepherdsville Elementary covered all the reading bases.

The University of Louisville baseball team visited the school, reading books in classrooms and stressing the importance of education.

Shepherdsville fourth grade instructor Ashley Byerley invited team members to the school as part of a schoolwide reading promotion.

Among the visiting players was former Bullitt East High School standout Brandon Alphin.

Head coach Dan McDonnell said the event was unusual in that the entire team visited the school, rather than a few players.

“We do this a couple of times each semester,” he said. “We’re trying to reach out to more communities.”

McDonnell added that school visits help promote the team, reminding students that Louisville baseball games include free admission.
