UPDATE: MW LIGHT-UP, SHEP PARADE CANCELED

-A A +A

Weather Storm Warning in effect through Saturday morning

The first winter weather of the holiday season is wreaking havoc on local holiday celebrations.

The Liberty Tax Service Christmas Parade in Shepherdsville and the Light-Up Mount Washington festivities were both canceled due to the severe conditions.

The National Weather Service in Louisville issued a winter storm warning for Bullitt County and surrounding areas through 1 a.m. Saturday.

NWS reported "a complex and messy period of weather with significant accumulations of snow, sleet and freezing rain possible" throughout the day on Friday.

Freezing rain moving into the area early Friday could transition to snow in the afternoon hours. Snow accumulations were expected between 2 to 6 inches, with a quarter to half inch of ice underneath.

Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the day, causing wet spots to freeze and creating hazardous driving conditions. Wind chills are expected to drop into the teens Friday night.

As a result of the forecast, Bullitt County Public Schools announced Friday closures at 5:30 a.m. The Jefferson Community and Technical College (JCTC) Bullitt Campus also canceled Friday courses.

The Bullitt County Courthouse and Judicial Center offices are closed, as is Shepherdsville City Hall.

Bullitt County Road Department crews are closing access to hilly roads located in the western part of the county. They will continue to treat roadways throughout the day.

The city of Mount Washington decided to cancel the Light-Up Mount Washington celebration. Mayor Joetta Calhoun was unsure of a make-up date at this time.

The Liberty Tax Service Christmas Parade was also canceled with no make-up date announced. Christmas lights at the park will remain lit throughout the weekend.
