Local singers will have the chance to see who’s the best at the Bullitt County Fair this year.
For the third consecutive year, the Bullitt County Vocalist of the Year competition will be held at the fairgrounds from Monday, June 17, to Saturday, June 22.
The contest, which is sponsored by the Bullitt County Arts Council and Bullitt County Public Libraries, will have tryouts in the pavilion Monday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Finals will be held at the inside stage in the main building on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Coordinator and competition founder, Judy Joy Nevitt said she started the competition in 2007 after she realized there were great singers in the county and saw a need to do something for them.
“I wanted to give singers in Bullitt County a platform to showcase their talent,” Nevitt said.
The competition has also been held in Mount Washington, Shepherdsville and Lebanon Junction in previous years, but Nevitt said moving it to the Bullitt County Fair gave it a home.
There are two categories: teen, ages 13-18, and adult, ages 19 and up.
A winner will be chosen from each category. Winners will receive a cash prize and a trophy.
Participants need to bring their music on a CD, a photo of themselves, $10 for the entry fee and proof they live in Bullitt County. Songs can be no longer than four minutes. Points will be deducted if the time limit is exceeded.
Throughout the week, special guest singers Johnny Grubbs and SoulShine will be performing during the tryouts and on Saturday last year’s winners, Tyler Warden and Mystee Robinson, will be performing.
To register, pick up a flier at any of the Bullitt County Public Libraries or register during tryouts. For more information, contact Nevitt at 502-773-6116.
