  • Troy Beam earns travel marketing certification

    ATLANTA -- Troy Beam has earned certification as a “Travel Marketing Professional” (TMP) after completing the three-year program of the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College.

    Beam was one of 57 new TMPs recognized at the STS spring meeting in Montgomery, Ala. The STS Marketing College started in 992, and 473 people have earned TMP certification.

    He is group sales manager for the Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourism and Convention Commission.

  • Next chapter turning for new LJ library

    LEBANON JUNCTION ee" For two years, the Lebanon Junction branch of the Bullitt County Public Library system has been forced to host a children’s summer reading program in the community center instead of at the library because of overcrowding.

    To BCPL Director Randy Matlow, the program’s popularity was encouraging, but counterproductive when the children couldn’t fit into Lebanon Junction’s small library for the event.

    “The whole point of the summer reading program is to encourage children to check out books,” Matlow said.

  • New sheriff's DARE car out on road to help teach big lesson

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - When it comes to the war against drug abuse, the Bullitt County Sheriffs dare to do more.

    That includes the force’s newest vehicle, the DARE patrol unit.

    A 1998 Ford already in the Sheriffs department’s custody, the unit was revamped into a prime vehicle with a new paint job, body work and accessories.

    The best thing about the new vehicle was the price. Chief deputy Danny Thompson said all the work was donated.

  • NB class makes up goodies for Kosair

    HEBRON ESTATES - The North Bullitt High School Skills for Success group made a successful donation to Kosair Children’s Hospital.

    Consisting of freshman students, Skills for Success donated 275 gift bags for children in Kosair’s emergency room as well as some outpatient children.

    Skills for Success coordinator Gelena Ballard said Kosair Goody Bags was originally created as a service project for North Bullitt’s Beta Club. This was the first year the Skills for Success program participated.

  • Projects to bring beauty planned this Saturday

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Local volunteers plan to perform the equivalent of a facelift to the community.

    The Bullitt County Operation Bright and Beautiful program is scheduled to begin Saturday, April 18, around the three largest cities.

    Event co-chairperson Ruth Chowning said the event gave volunteers an organized opportunity to touch up the community.

    “We have several places where we want to clean,” she said.

    The Bullitt County Woman's Club hosted its annual Irene Carroll Scholarship Luncheon and Style Show Saturday.

    The luncheon's theme was "So you say it's Your Birthday?" in honor of the club's 85 years of service to the community.

  • Groups come to honor youth

    HILLVIEW – The Wal-Mart Brave Hearts continued their charitable efforts for another special child in the Bullitt County area.

    Nathan Ing, a seven-year-old Shepherdsville resident, has experienced cancerous brain tumors for a majority of his life.

    Nathan has remained a strong and lovable young boy throughout his ordeal, and the Hillview Wal-Mart recognized him with a special day in his honor.

    The Wal-Mart Brave Hearts donated money and time toward the event, hosting cake wheels and hot dog sales fundraisers.

  • Hebron's Stayton gives up his hair to raise funds for others

    HEBRON ESTATES – It’s a feel-good story. Bullitt Countians helping a fellow Bullitt Countian. It’s an older kid helping out a younger kid.

    It feels about as refreshing as a newly shaven head.

    Matthew Stayton, a seventh grader at Hebron Middle School, had his mop of long hair shaved off as part of the annual St. Baldrick’s Day event.

    St. Baldrick’s, the largest volunteer fundraising event for childhood cancer research, allows participants to collect sponsorship donations for having their heads shaved.

  • Local residents earn honors from state history group

    FRANKFORT — Two Bullitt County residents and a volunteer group were honored at the 2009 Kentucky History Awards, held March 7 at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History. 

    Sponsored by the Kentucky Historical Society, the annual award ceremony recognizes outstanding achievements in Kentucky history.   

    The Bullitt County Genealogical Society Cemetery Documentation Team volunteer group received an award of merit for their Bullitt County Cemetery Documentation Project.

  • Hurst has big shoes to fill in state contest

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Emily Hurst compared her teaching philosophy to race car driving.

    Hurst compared the two by noting their continuous strive for success, with assistance from a full team, while maneuvering around obstacles and giving their best effort in hopes of winning.

    It was the way classroom obstacles were handled and the support from fellow faculty members that Hurst said helped her achieve the honor of Bullitt County’s 2009 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
