  • Unity shows it can overcome big obstacles

    HILLVIEW - The temperatures were cold and the snow was piled along the parking lot.

    But there was nothing but warmth inside Unity Baptist Church.

    Faced with more than its share of obstacles over the past year, pastor Rob Rodgers said the members have survived. And they have survived stronger than ever.

    Last December, all the church property was lost when fire destroyed its leased facility on Hillview Boulevard.

    That was just the first of many obstacles.

  • McIntosh ends retirement to take over as principal at Old Mill Elementary

    MOUNT WASHINGTON – Les McIntosh has been known and respected as a quality educator for years in Bullitt County.

    Members of the Old Mill Elementary Site-Based Decision Making Council agreed with the reputation.

    McIntosh began serving as Old Mill interim principal July 1. At the school year’s midway point, the SBDM council voted to hire him on a permanent basis.

    The SBDM committee went through a first wave of applicants and interviews prior to re-posting the position opening.

  • LJ's Kassi Gilbert reigns supreme in the hierarchy of spellers in Bullitt County

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Kassi Nicole Gilbert had made that trip on the stage before.

    But, this time, she was determined to do even better.

    After finishing fifth overall as a fourth-grader, the Lebanon Junction Elementary student showed her supremacy in winning the 2009 Bullitt County Spelling Bee.

    Matching the elementary and middle school winners, Gilbert and Nichols Elementary’s Sean Brady battled until the 14th round of words before a winner would be declared.

  • Heines honored as Heart of Hillview winner

    HILLVIEW – Pat Heines, a Hillview resident since the city first incorporated, was selected as the 2009 Kroger Heart of Hillview recipient.

    Heines was selected from a number of nominees presented at the store. Nominees were selected based on their charity within the community.

    During a ceremony at the store, Heines received honorary proclamations from Kroger officials as well as Hillview mayor Jim Eadens.

    Heines was selected primarily for her 30 years with local Girl Scouts organizations, three as a member and 27 more as a volunteer adult.

  • American Red Cross Valentine Gala 2009

    The Valentine Gala is an annual fund-raiser for the Bullitt/Spencer County chapter of the American Red Cross.

    Featuring dinner music by Hans Sander and dance music by Karen Kraft and Kiks.

    Service Manager Mike Crenshaw played the good sport during the group's annual Valentine Gala as he agreed to sing with Karen Kraft. Crenshaw had the chance to sing Respect but quickly made an exit from the stage.

  • Annual Style Show will again honor academic leaders

    SHEPHERDSVILLE — For 85 years Bullitt County Woman’s Club members have been champions for education, style and community service.

    Those values will be the focus at this year’s 38th-Annual Irene Carroll Scholarship Luncheon and Style Show scheduled for March 21 at Paroquet Springs Conference Centre.

    “We’re kind of building the whole show around that theme,” said style show co-coordinator Jennifer Porter. “This is our 85th birthday. We’re the oldest civic organization in Bullitt County.”

  • Play to premiere on Thursday night

    SHEPHERDSVILLE — There is a magical world premier taking place in Shepherdsville this week and it could mark the beginning of a local community theatre legacy.

    This Thursday, the Bullitt County Arts Council’s Bullitt County Theatre Company will perform its first-ever performance of playwright Bill Breuer’s The Faery’s Kiss, a romantic comedy fairy tale.

    The performance is taking place at the Bullitt Central High School auditorium with showings March 5-8 and March 12-15.

  • Grand Slam promotion: Over 900 take advantage of free breakfast at local Denny's

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Normally a grand slam causes a stir during the World Series, not the Super Bowl.

    Because of a nationally televised commercial during the third quarter of the Super Bowl XLIII broadcast, Bullitt Countians almost tackled the Shepherdsville Denny’s Restaurant.

    The commercial announced that all Denny’s locations nationwide would offer a free Grand Slam breakfast the Tuesday following the game from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    The offer included the Bullitt County location, which remained crowded during those hours last Tuesday.

  • Artists honored for their work

    During the monthly meeting of the Visual Artists of Bullitt County, winners were selected.

    Carole Powell and Jeannie Bailey were tied for first place honors. Gail Bagwell was second for her still lilfe painting.

    The meeting was held Jan. 27 at the Ridgway Memorial Library with Ruth Chowning of the extension office speaking on the Barn Quilts project. Eight people were present.
