  • Hasch denied probation; appeal to be filed

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Listening to pleas from both sides, Bullitt Circuit Judge Rodney Burress called it the most difficult decision he had ever been required to make in deciding whether to grant a defendant probation.

    But, citing any reduction in the jury's recommendation being a depreciation of the crime, Burress ruled Friday morning that Janice Hasch should receive a two-year prison sentence for the April 2008 shooting death of her husband.

  • Debris drop-off site open through March 14

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – Bullitt County residents have just a few more days to get rid of their storm-related debris.

    Bullitt Fiscal Court voted to allow the debris collection site at the Bullitt County Stockyards to remain open through Saturday, March 14.

    The site will be open from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturdays. The site will be closed on Sundays.

    The final day will be March 14.

    The county is not doing curbside pickup of debris.

  • Grandmother claims missing granddaughter could be in Bullitt County

    A Louisville teen has been reported missing and could be in Bullitt County, according to her grandmother who resides in Mount Washington.

    Fifteen-year-old Jessica Bara of Louisville was last sighted March 2 near a McDonald's and Domino's Pizza on Preston Highway in the Okolona area, said Bara's grandmother, Mount Washington resident Vicky Beatty.

    Beatty said Bara attends Southern High School and has been missing from her home since Feb. 24.

  • Bizarre events leave two men in hospital after shooting

    BROOKS - Two men are in critical condition at University of Louisville Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds in a bizarre incident this morning.

    According to Bullitt County Sheriff Donnie Tinnell, deputies got a call around 6:15 a.m. to the intersection of Sparks Drive and Brooks Schoolhouse Road.

    Tinnell said that John A. Burbank, 39, lives in an apartment behind the home of his mother, Patricia, and stepfather, Thomas Tyler.

  • School board faced with drainage issues; residents upset with plans

    SHEPHERDSVILLE -- The Jarki Mobile Home Community has been a fixture in Bullitt County for many years.

    For the past 25 years, Sherry and Tom Martin have owned and managed the community, which is home to over 300 residents.

    There had been some drainage issues in the past but nothing like those resulting after the construction of Bullitt Lick Middle School in the 1970s and Shepherdsville Elementary School four years ago.

  • MW communities invited to talk about proposed sewer plans

    MOUNT WASHINGTON — Community members will have a chance Wednesday evening to voice their opinions of a proposed water and sewer rate hike, as well as learn about plans for the city’s sewage treatment plant expansion project.

    The city is hosting a public hearing at 7 p.m. at the City Hall Annex Building on Branham Way. Residents can learn about the city’s updated 201 sewer facilities plan and hear a presentation that will review key components of sewer plant expansion project.

  • LJ employees might have new way to save money

    LEBANON JUNCTION - City employees may have another retirement savings option in Lebanon Junction.

    The Lebanon Junction City Council unanimously agreed to allow employees to voluntarily participate in the state deferred compensation program.

    According to an agency representative, the retirement program is voluntary. Full- or part-time employees may contribute to the program.

    This provides a pre-tax way to save for the future. There is no cost to the city with the exception of the time it takes to set up the program and to issue the checks to the state.

  • Members oppose new liquor store near church

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Members of Mount Zion Baptist Church had a liquor store near their congregation for a number of years.

    With that business closed for the widening of Buckman Street, members don’t want another to move into the area.

    However, it might be little city officials can do.

    The Rev. Billy Jenkins, pastor at Mount Zion, voiced his opposition to a proposed liquor store on the corner of West Blue Lick Road and Buckman Street.

  • Explanations for higher electric rates in winter

    SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Before the big ice storm, many electrical customers were concerned with their bills in December.

    Randy Burba, spokesman for Salt River Electric, said the co-op received many phone calls when bills were up significantly over their November statements.

    The increase had nothing to do with any billing hike, said Burba.

    Salt River has not had a rate increase approved by the state Public Service Commission since 1993.

    However, several factors led to customers seeing a sharp hike.

  • Mother, daughter indicted for defrauding Red Cross

    MOUNT WASHINGTON -- Over a 10-year period, the American Red Cross may have defrauded over $133,000 for respite care that was never administered.

    And a pair of Mount Washington women have been indicted in federal court and could face up to 30 years in prison.

    On Monday, a federal grand jury indicted Sylvia Rednour and Jennifer Roby on charges of conspiracy, mail fraud and forgery.

    They were taken into custody on Wednesday and housed in the Oldham County Jail.
