  • Shepherdsville Sewer Expansion: Councilman believes savings possible

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - There was much excitement recently with the announcement that a major sewer extension and plant expansion would become reality in the city of Shepherdsville.

    The plan would take sewer lines south to Highway 245 and pick up various customers, including Jim Beam Distillery and the future home of a community and technical college.

    The existing treatment plant, which often runs at or over capacity during rainy periods, would be expanded.

    Between state and private funding, the financing made the deal possible.

  • To The BIG SHOW - BE heads to state

    HODGENVILLE - Not storms, nor cold bats, nor even a graduation could stop the Bullitt East Chargers from winning the Section III Baseball Tournament last week at LaRue County High School.

    The final piece of the puzzle came on Saturday night when the red and gold rode the pitching arm of Brandon Alphin to the title in the best-of-three series against Elizabethtown, winning the third game 6-0. The junior allowed only three hits and only one Panther runner reached third base.

  • Maryville pool to open; others wait

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Swimmers in the county will have at least one pool to use this summer.

    But the fate of the other three county-operated facilities looks bleak for 2009.

    Supporters seeking to open the pools, which were forced to not open next week due to federal safety legislation, had to literally hold their breath for over an hour as magistrates debated the subject.

    In the end, they were able to return to the surface and exhale as Bullitt Fiscal Court unanimously voted to spend the money needed to bring the pool behind Maryville Elementary into compliance.

  • 2009 BULLITT COUNTY FAIR: JUNE 15-20

    In trying economic times the Bullitt County Fair serves as affordable family entertainment close to home.

    The Fair Board hopes to include as many fun things to experience as possible during this year's event, scheduled June 15-20.

    Fair Board president Jimmy Anderson said some changes were made following last year's attendance drop. He added that the Fairgrounds' centralized location, free parking and special events for a $10 admission was a good deal.

    "Hopefully everybody will come out," said Anderson. "It's a good price for what you get."

  • Job applications taken as part of federal program

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - There are still plenty of opportunities for youth in the community to find a job for the summer through the SummerWorks 2009 program.

    Funded through federal stimulus dollars, KentuckianaWorks is coordinating with agencies such as the Bullitt County Adult and Community Agency program to provide jobs for 16-24 year-olds.

    Residents of Bullitt, Henry, Spencer, Shelby, Oldham and Trimble Counties are eligible for the summer jobs. There are some income requirements to be eligible for jobs.

  • Big Blast - Whitmer's HR lifts East to title

    LOUISVILLE - Dreams really do come true.

    A thousand times before, Bullitt East junior Josh Whitmer had dreamed about stepping to the plate at the end of a big game. Each of those times, the big left-handed hitter came through in the clutch.

    On Thursday, it was the real deal. Bottom of the ninth, two outs and the game tied at 6-6 in the championship game of the Sixth Region Tournament. No problem.

  • Highway 245 zoning request grows heated

    CLERMONT - Representatives of Bernheim Research Forest and Arboretum and the Jim Beam Distillery are excited about some of the changes proposed for the Highway 245 corridor near Interstate 65.

    And they want to protect it from unsightly development.

    But Leonard and Christopher Mattingly don’t feel their plans would hurt the area in the least.

    And the Bullitt County Joint Planning Commission agreed - with conditions.

    The Bullitt County Fiscal Court was asked to either deny the request or place more restrictions on the property.

  • Spainhour considers run at state Senate

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - With state Sen. Gary Tapp’s announcement that he would not run for re-election to the General Assembly, Bullitt County officials began to talk about possible candidates for the position.

    Tapp threw his support to fellow Shelbyville Republican Paul Hornback in the District 20 state senate race.

    There appears to be one candidate in Bullitt County who is seriously looking at making a run at the position.

    John Spainhour, a long-time attorney, is exploring the possibility of seeking the Democratic nomination next spring.

  • NB's Cissell to play in East/West game

    HEBRON ESTATES - Former North Bullitt football standout Dalton Cissell will play on Friday in the Kentucky East-West All-Star game at L.T. Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University.

    There was some confusion back in March when the original rosters were announced. Cissell, the ninth-leading rusher in Kentucky history, was not part of the team. That oversight was corrected and Cissell will wear number 21 on Friday in his final high school football game before heading to the University of Louisville as a preferred walk-on.
