  • North wins 3 of 4 and gets Wagner back for the stretch

    HEBRON ESTATES -- Unlike just about every other team in the area last week, the North Bullitt Eagles came close to playing a full schedule, managing to get in four games with three of those being victories.

    The only setback came on Saturday when the Eagles dropped a 5-4 decision to Oldham County in the first game of a four-team tournament at Kentucky Country Day. The green and gold rebounded later in the afternoon to take third place with an 11-1 victory over Portland Christian.

  • 24th District Softball: Early offense pushes BC softball into semi-finals

    FAIRDALE - It was worth the wait.

    Forced to stand around for over an hour waiting for umpires, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars unleashed that pent-up energy with seven runs over the first two innings as they rolled past Fairdale 8-1 on Monday in the first game of the 24th District Softball Tournament.

    The victory moved Bullitt Central into Tuesday’s semi-finals where the maroon and gray were to play top-seeded North Bullitt.

    Bullitt Central had beaten Fairdale 10-3 in their only meeting during the regular season.

  • Committee finds some revenue, cuts some expenses

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The hunt for finding revenue and cutting expenses began in earnest as the committee appointed by Bullitt Fiscal Court began its work.

    In just one session, the committee led by magistrates Eddie Bleemel and Joe Laswell, heard some good news.

    In the proposed $15.3 million budget for 2009-10, the jail and emergency medical services were the largest departments. Those were the ones tackled first by the committee.

    County officials are trying to find a way to eliminate the need for some employees to lose one day of work each week.

  • City taking step to revise civil service

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - City officials say that the civil service system of employee protection is not going away.

    However, there appears to be changes in the making.

    The Shepherdsville City Council listened to the first reading to repeal the current ordinance and adopt a revised set of standards.

    The final reading and vote will come at the June 8 meeting.

    (Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the May 25 meeting has been cancelled.)

  • Transportation study to be discussed May 28

    The first open house for the Bullitt County Transportation Study will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 28, 2009 at the Paroquet Springs Conference Center, 395 Paroquet Springs Drive in Shepherdsville.

    The study will provide the basis for identifying and prioritizing future transportation improvements in Bullitt County over the next 20 years. It will include an evaluation and analysis of existing and projected traffic conditions, an evaluation of alternative transportation modes, and recommendations of priorities for future projects.

  • City receives $3M stimulus on sewer line, plant expansion

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Jeff Conder was all smiles on Thursday morning. As a matter of fact, so was Shepherdsville mayor Sherman Tinnell.

    After over a year of discussions and negotiations, the Shepherdsville City Council announced on April 27 that it felt it could tackle a major sewer line expansion to southern Bullitt County and expand its current treatment plant.

    The only question was how would pay the freight for the construction projects.

  • Burton, Benkert get to 'perform' talens in Nashville for HOSA

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Kandace Burton and Katelyn Benkert hope to fulfill their dream of performing in Nashville.

    Neither are singers. They are Bullitt Central senior students currently enrolled in the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) program at the Bullitt County Tech Center.

    Both Burton and Benkert will compete this summer in the 32nd annual National Leadership Competition in Nashville, earning their trip by performing well at the state level.

    Benkert earned a state second place finish in Persuasive Speaking, while Burton took third in Job Interview.

  • County energized to move on with stimulus opportunity

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - There is a check sitting in Washington, D.C., with the county’s name on it for over $289,000.

    But there is a little work that must be done before Bullitt County can utilize the federal stimulus funds provided by the U.S. Department of Energy.

    To make the grant become a reality, Bullitt Fiscal Court retained the services of Bryan Kirby of Community and Economic Development Associates of Richmond. Kirby is no stranger to Bullitt County as he has worked on water grants previously.

  • Guthrie brings civics to life for Cedar Grove class

    CEDAR GROVE -- Fifth graders at Cedar Grove Elementary were treated to a living Civics class presentation with a visit from U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie.

    Gathered in the school cafeteria, fifth graders listened as Guthrie discussed the creation of the United States’ governmental system.

    Focusing on the importance of the checks and balances system, Guthrie explained the Legislative, Judicial and Executive sides to the federal government.

    “Your teachers fall under the Executive branch along with the President,” he said.

  • BE boys roll; North, East tie for girls' crown

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - At the end of Tuesday’s All-Bullitt County Track and Field Championships at Bullitt East, North Bullitt track coach Mike Whitfill, who shares the duties with Lindsey Wegley, was left talking about what might have been after his girls’ team appeared to lose the meet by a single point.

    Two days later, after Bullitt East track coach Lenny Raley had gone back over the scoring, it was learned that the Lady Eagles had indeed pulled off a minor miracle, scoring enough points to tie the Lady Chargers 66 to 66. Bullitt Central was third with 26 points.
