  • Officials critique actions in ice storm

    PIONEER VILLAGE - For Mike Phillips, the light can truly be seen at the end of another emergency tunnel.

    For the director of Bullitt County Emergency Management Agency, Phillips believes all local organizations worked very well together during the recent ice storm.

    But he also understands there are things that could be done better.

    Local agencies recently gathered for a critique of the ice storm.

    “This is the event we’ve been talking about since 1994 when we were left on our own for several days,” said Phillips.

  • Fox Chase opts to keep tax rates same due to economy

    FOX CHASE -- Realizing the tough economic times, members of the Fox Chase City Council elected to keep the property tax rates the same for this year.

    Allowed to increase its real property tax rate as high as 13.99 cents per $100 of assessed value, the council voted to keep the rate at 13.90 cents, which is the same as the previous year.

    Even with the same rate, the city could generate an additional $3,000 for the year.

  • Thefts keep MW police very busy

    MOUNT WASHINGTON — A rash of burglaries has kept the Mount Washington police busy recently.

    The most recent was on March 25, when a residence at 191 Abels Way #10 was burglarized. Det. Buddy Stump said approximately $1,500 of property was stolen, including a large, flat-screen television.

    Stump said the perpetrators entered by kicking in the door.

    Warrants have been issued for the three suspects, Leonard Waddell, 21, Nathaniel Scarborough, 22 and Christopher Ohlmann, 22. All three suspects are Louisville residents, Stump said.

  • CASA, Chamber of Commerce find new home on S. Buckman

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – The Bullitt County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program needed more office space, with more privacy, while remaining close to the courthouse.

    The Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce was also looking for a new home.

    Both organizations got their wish and became neighbors in the process.

    The former Conway and Lemme law offices, located at 279 S.Buckman Street in Shepherdsville, have become the new Chamber and CASA headquarters.

    The building sits between Davidson Memorial United Methodist Church and Hardy/Close Funeral Home.

  • Fatality in I-65 crossover accident

    LEBANON JUNCTION - A Louisville man was killed in a crossover accident on Interstate 65 Wednesday morning.

    Kentucky State Police reported that Paul Waddle was parked in the right shoulder of southbound I-65 near mile 106 when his Toyota was struck.

    A Waste Management dumptruck driven by Steven Barnes of Lebanon Junction was traveling northbound. Police said the dumptruck crossed the median for unknown reasons.

    Waddle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bullitt County Coroner's office.

  • Singing for a special cause

    The judges watched and listened as a number of contestants took the stage Saturday for a karaoke competition with winners being the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

    PBI Bank hosted this second annual fund-raiser.

    The Bullitt County Relay for Life is scheduled to take place Friday, May 15, at North Bullitt High School.

  • Senior Prom

    HILLVIEW – Alternative Adult Day Health Care Center members enjoyed a special senior prom dance combined with a St. Patrick’s Day theme.

    The special guests for the party included 18 members from the University of Louisville Sigma Kappa sorority.

    Sigma Kappa recognizes the National Alzheimer’s Association as one of its organization’s philanthropies. U of L Sigma Kappa foundations chair Maggie Varner said the national sorority was one of the biggest donors to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

  • Troy Beam earns travel marketing certification

    ATLANTA -- Troy Beam has earned certification as a “Travel Marketing Professional” (TMP) after completing the three-year program of the Southeast Tourism Society Marketing College.

    Beam was one of 57 new TMPs recognized at the STS spring meeting in Montgomery, Ala. The STS Marketing College started in 992, and 473 people have earned TMP certification.

    He is group sales manager for the Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourism and Convention Commission.

  • 155 years: Jury recommendation may be largest ever in sexual abuse case

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – It didn’t take a Bullitt County Grand Jury long Wednesday to hand down a guilty verdict for convicted sex offender Perry Bennington.

    And it took even less time for the 12 jurors to sentence Bennington to 155 years in prison – the maximum sentence – for 14 separate sexual abuse-related charges.

    It was a decision about which Bennington showed no emotion.

    Bennington, 59, was found guilty in Bullitt Circuit Court on charges of first and third degree sodomy, first and third degree rape, first degree sexual abuse and incest.

  • Grant would help prepare for next 'one'

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – What natural disaster has Bullitt County not suffered in the past 20 years?

    How about a break of the Taylorsville dam?

    That could be the next exercise conducted by the Bullitt County Emergency Management Agency.

    Director Mike Phillips is looking toward the federal government to provide some assistance in making that mock disaster happen.
