  • East softball needs a few breaks

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The record isn’t what second-year Bullitt East softball coach Ed Phelps would like, but he feels that with a key play here or a hit there, that the Lady Cougars would have a much better record than the 1-6 start.

    That was especially true last week as the team went to Fort Walton Beach, Florida for a spring break tournament. Bullitt East lost all five games on the trip but two of the losses were by single runs.

  • Woman's Club celebrates education, style at annual scholarship luncheon

    The Bullitt County Woman's Club hosted its annual Irene Carroll Scholarship Luncheon and Style Show Saturday.

    The luncheon's theme was "So you say it's Your Birthday?" in honor of the club's 85 years of service to the community.

  • Host families are need

    This summer, 20 young people from Japan along with two adult chaperones will come to Kentucky to learn about American families and culture. A great way for you and your child to take part in this international experience is by becoming a host family for one of these students. Applications are now being accepted.

    Not only do 4-H host families get to enjoy helping the Japanese 4-H learn about American families and culture, but they also learn about Japanese culture, customs and history. Many times, international bonds that last a lifetime are created.

  • April Fools' Rocks

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - A dumptruck lost a load of gravel along N. Buckman Street Wednesday afternoon.

    The truck tailgate released in front of The Pioneer News and Standard Publishing offices, causing gravel to spill onto N. Buckman, primarily in the southbound lane.

    The truck continued southbound along N. Buckman through Shepherdsville. It was eventually stopped by Shepherdsville Police units near Highway 480.

    The N. Buckman southbound lane was covered with the loose gravel from Adam Shepherd Parkway to W. Blue Lick Road.

  • Bullitt man guilty of re-entering country

       LOUISVILLE – Jose de Jesus Ornelas-Rodriguez, of Bullitt County, pled guilty on March 24, 2009, to charges of illegally re-entering the United States, Acting U.S. Attorney Candace G. Hill of the Western District of Kentucky.

    Ornelas-Rodriguez, an alien and citizen of Mexico, pled guilty and admitted that on or about Oct. 23, 2008, he was found in the United States, after having been previously deported from the United States, and did not have the consent to apply for re-entry into the United States.

  • Officials know importance of task force to combat drugs

    SHEPHERDSVILLE  – The affect of methamphetamine is far more than simply the people that are manufacturing, trafficking or using the illegal drug.

    Many aspects of society are affected and law enforcement officials believe the current drug task force in Bullitt County is the most effective way to combat the problem.

    Danny Thompson, chief deputy Bullitt County sheriff, has been in law enforcement for four decades and has seen the influx of methamphetamine.

  • Legislature hitting home stretch in session

    FRANKFORT — As we hit the home stretch of this 30-day legislative session this week, we directed our attention to a range of bills that will make a difference in the lives of average Kentuckians.

    This is our last opportunity to focus on Senate bills, as next week, each chamber will turn its attention to final passage of legislation already passed by the other, so the Governor can sign or veto the bills during our two-week recess later in March.

  • Groups come to honor youth

    HILLVIEW – The Wal-Mart Brave Hearts continued their charitable efforts for another special child in the Bullitt County area.

    Nathan Ing, a seven-year-old Shepherdsville resident, has experienced cancerous brain tumors for a majority of his life.

    Nathan has remained a strong and lovable young boy throughout his ordeal, and the Hillview Wal-Mart recognized him with a special day in his honor.

    The Wal-Mart Brave Hearts donated money and time toward the event, hosting cake wheels and hot dog sales fundraisers.

  • Lady Eagles get plenty of early game action

    HEBRON ESTATES - The North Bullitt Lady Eagles had the peddle to the metal last week, playing seven games in the opening week of the regular season, more than twice as many games as any other spring sports team.

    Most of the games were played over the weekend as the green and gold dodged rain drops to compete in the Ballard Invitational. Against some top-flight opponents, coach Eric Lambert’s team reached the tournament semi-finals before losing for a second time in as many days to Christian Academy.
