  • Just how good have 6th Region girls been? Very!

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - When Bullitt County’s three high schools were realigned into the Sixth Region in 2005, the general consensus was that, at least at the beginning, the local programs would be able to compete better against the girls’ programs in western Jefferson County than against the boys’ sports.

        While that might still turn out to be the case in the big picture, it has been nearly impossible to keep up with the best girls’ basketball teams in the Sixth Region.

  • Mixed results for East baseball in week one

    MOUNT WASHINGTON ee" The first week of the regular season for the 11th-ranked Bullitt East Chargers had some highlights and some lowlights, but the team posted a 2-1 record heading to Florida this week for spring break.

    The season got off to a strong start on Monday as the red and gold rolled past Eastern, the third-ranked team in the state, by a 5-1 count. A day later, the Chargers scored 11 runs in the first three innings but then had to hang on to beat Sixth Region rival DeSales 15-12.

  • North-Central baseball game moved to North; Softball at BC, Monday Rain-outs

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Because of continued drainage problems with their new field, Bullitt Central has been forced to move Wednesday’s district showdown with North Bullitt to the Eagles’ home field.

    Bullitt Central has yet to play a game on the new field. Games the first week of the season had already been changed to away games and then the Cougars played in the Valley Invitational over spring break. It was hoped they could play at home this week, but at this point it will take at least two days of no rain before the team can play at home.

  • Ex-educator could face up to eight years

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - An educator in both Bullitt and Nelson counties has admitted his guilty to rape and sodomy charges dating back to 1993.

    Larry Brent Childress, 41, of Pioneer Village, entered the plea Thursday morning in Bullitt Circuit Court.

    Childress was indicted last fall for rape and sodomy. Two of the charges were dismissed and two others were amended.

    Childress could face up to eight years in prison.

  • Cougars need a 'mulligan', but then get it right

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - If baseball were golf, then the Bullitt Central Cougars needed a ‘mulligan’ to start the 2009 season.

    On opening day, nothing went right for the maroon and gray as they gave up 13 runs in the bottom of the first inning during a 20-1 loss to Sixth Region rival DeSales.

    While there are no ‘mulligans’ when it comes to baseball, the Cougars quickly put that game out of mind. The rest of the week turned out much better as coach Tommy Alvey’s team was competitive in a 7-6 loss to Spencer County and then beat Moore 6-2.

  • Bennington could serve 155 years in prison

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - A Bullitt Circuit Court jury has recommended that Perry Bennington serve the next 155 years in prison for 14 sex-related counts.

    The jury deliberated about an hour on the penalty phase. The recommended sentences ranged from five to 20 years in prison with the recommendation to serve the terms consecutively. Bennington could serve 155 years in prison.

    Final sentencing will be held June 8 at 10 a.m.

    Bennington was found guilty on multiple charges of rape, sodomy and incest involving his daughter over a 16-year period dating back to 1974.

  • He's Back - Gallemore set to lead Lady Cougars

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - After a year ‘away from home’, Bullitt Central softball coach Buddy Gallemore is back in his familiar spot leading the Lady Cougar program.

    For six years Gallemore was a fixture with Bullitt Central softball, two years as an assistant coach before taking the top sport for the next four years. Last year, Gallemore strayed to the top job at Seneca High School while continuing to teach at Bullitt Central. Now, he is back with a number of familiar faces ready to help.

  • BE baseball ready to live up to expectations

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Perhaps not since the early 1990s with the high-powered softball program have expectations been as high for a spring sports team as they are this season for the Bullitt East baseball squad.

    With all but two players returning from a team that posted a program best 27-7 mark last year, a record that included a 14-game winning streak, the Chargers are sitting amongst the state’s elite this season. Already, coaches in Kentucky have ranked Bullitt East 11th in the state to start the season.

  • Lady Chargers will be young, but energized

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - A year of familiarity with each other should pay dividends this spring for the Bullitt East softball program.

    A year ago, head coach Ed Phelps was not hired until a few months before the start of the 2008 season. That made it a learning experience for the coach and his players throughout the season.

    Now, the coach knows his players and the players know what to expect from the coach.

  • New home means new life for Cougar baseball

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - New season. New field. New era. New attitude.

    A new life. That is how the Bullitt Central Cougars are looking at the 2009 season. When the team moves into its new field in two weeks, head coach Tommy Alvey and his squad are ready to begin anew.

    “We’re excited to have a new field,” the coach said just before he starts his third season at the helm. “The kids are positive. It’s something the kids are proud of and can call their own.”
