  • Artists honored for their work

    During the monthly meeting of the Visual Artists of Bullitt County, winners were selected.

    Carole Powell and Jeannie Bailey were tied for first place honors. Gail Bagwell was second for her still lilfe painting.

    The meeting was held Jan. 27 at the Ridgway Memorial Library with Ruth Chowning of the extension office speaking on the Barn Quilts project. Eight people were present.

  • Grandmother claims missing granddaughter could be in Bullitt County

    A Louisville teen has been reported missing and could be in Bullitt County, according to her grandmother who resides in Mount Washington.

    Fifteen-year-old Jessica Bara of Louisville was last sighted March 2 near a McDonald's and Domino's Pizza on Preston Highway in the Okolona area, said Bara's grandmother, Mount Washington resident Vicky Beatty.

    Beatty said Bara attends Southern High School and has been missing from her home since Feb. 24.

  • Fairdale stuns Lady Cougars; North battles East to the end

    HEBRON ESTATES - There was nothing but heartbreak for the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars on Wednesday as their dream season came to a premature end when they were upset by Fairdale by a 62-58 count in the semi-finals of the 24th District Tournament which was being played at North Bullitt.

    The Lady Cougars had beaten Fairdale twice during the regular season, although, both games were decided by less than nine points.

  • 24th District Basketball Tournament: Lady Chargers pull away late to beat Fairdale

    HEBRON ESTATES - When the season began, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers had a lot of goals. The most pressing of those goals being to win the first Girls’ 24th District title by a Bullitt County team.

    Coach Chris Stallings’ squad got that check mark out of the way on Friday as they pulled away late from three-time defending champion Fairdale for a 58-41 victory.

    Bullitt East (22-8) seemingly had control of the game from the outset, but it wasn’t until the last four minutes that the team could take a deep breath and start celebrating.

  • Wine festival proposed as possible tourist attraction; Winery wins top regional honors

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Bullitt County may be part of the Bourbon Trail but it might also be part of a new wine festival.

    Members of the Shepherdsville-Bullitt County Tourist and Convention Commission listened to an intriguing presentation.

    Although he wasn’t looking to organize the event, award-winning wine grower Jim Wight felt Bullitt County was ripe to host a festival devoted to those fruits that grow from the vine.

    Vineyards in Kentucky are relatively new but Wight said most are growing in popularity and most are doing an excellent job.

  • National FFA week being observed; Bullitt Central has chapter

    INDIANAPOLIS -- The National FFA Organization will celebrate National FFA week Feb. 21-28, 2009.

    Step Up, Stand Out is the theme this year, challenging FFA members to step up to responsibilities, stand out from the rest of the crowd and reach for success.

    Nearly half a million FFA members across the nation will participate in National FFA Week activities at the local and state levels.

    “Step Up, Stand Out is not only a way of life for FFA members, but it is also a call to action for all students,” said Paul Moya, national FFA president.

  • Bizarre events leave two men in hospital after shooting

    BROOKS - Two men are in critical condition at University of Louisville Hospital after suffering gunshot wounds in a bizarre incident this morning.

    According to Bullitt County Sheriff Donnie Tinnell, deputies got a call around 6:15 a.m. to the intersection of Sparks Drive and Brooks Schoolhouse Road.

    Tinnell said that John A. Burbank, 39, lives in an apartment behind the home of his mother, Patricia, and stepfather, Thomas Tyler.

  • Reptile show has found new showcase in Shepherdsville

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - A new event will crawl, hop and slither into Bullitt County each month.

    The Kentucky Reptile Expo is now being hosted at the Paroquet Springs Conference Centre in Shepherdsville.

    The regional expo allows patrons an opportunity to buy, sell and trade live reptiles and amphibians as well as food and supplies.

    Promoters Jaime and Jarrod Greer of Grayson recently took over the expo, previously held in Shelbyville. The couple began in the reptile expo business in 2001.

  • Fairdale turns the tables on Trojans

    HEBRON ESTATES - The Fairdale Bulldogs made it three straight 24th District titles on Saturday when they reversed a pair of regular season losses to the Southern Trojans and beat them 63-57.

    The game marked the first time in at least 35 years that a Bullitt County team did not play for the boys’ district title in its own tourney final.

  • School board faced with drainage issues; residents upset with plans

    SHEPHERDSVILLE -- The Jarki Mobile Home Community has been a fixture in Bullitt County for many years.

    For the past 25 years, Sherry and Tom Martin have owned and managed the community, which is home to over 300 residents.

    There had been some drainage issues in the past but nothing like those resulting after the construction of Bullitt Lick Middle School in the 1970s and Shepherdsville Elementary School four years ago.
