  • Bullitt Central FFA students earn honors at recent regional welding competition

    The Bullitt Central FFA traveled to Carroll County recently to compete in the regional welding competition.

    Billy Graham received an individual No. 1 ranking in a field of 28 competitors.

    As a team, Bullitt Central placed third overall out of seven teams.

    FFA teacher Justin Peake was joined by Alex Mason, Billy Graham, David Kennedy and Shane Owen.

  • Shelter users look for ways to pass time

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Shepherdsville City Hall gymnasium came in handy this week as a temporary shelter for victims of the recent winter storm.

    The Bullitt/Spencer County American Red Cross hosted the makeshift shelter in cooperation with the City of Shepherdsville. The shelter officially opened Tuesday night at 11 p.m.

  • Money Crunch: Experts provide tips on how families can deal with difficulties

    HILLVIEW - As a Family Resource Center coordinator with Overdale and Maryville Elementary, Betty Marshall sees first-hand what pressures a declining economy places on families.

    Marshall teamed with Louisville attorney Tracy Hirsch to host a helpful program called “Coping with the Credit Crunch” at Jewish Hospital Medical Center South.

    “Financial concerns for parents can impact kids in school,” said Marshall. “We hope to be able to help school kids and future school kids.”

  • KSP's Pavey delivers powerful message on meth

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Methamphetamine use and abuse is among the most widespread problems in today’s society. A key task for law enforcement officials is education and awareness of the dangers surrounding meth.

    Kentucky State Police trooper Steve Pavey hopes to make young people aware of the growing problem in an attempt to keep them from horrible life situations. He presented a meth awareness program to students at Bullitt Lick Middle School and the Bullitt County Adult and Community Education’s JAG program.

  • Iroquois shows why it's state's top-rated team

    LOUISVILLE - The Bullitt East Lady Chargers learned they still have some work to do to run with the top team in the Sixth Region and the state of Kentucky.

    Facing off against Iroquois on Tuesday, the Lady Chargers fell behind by 17 points in the first half before rallying to within 46-39 a minute into the fourth quarter. That was as close as the Lady Chargers could get as the state’s top-ranked team held on for a 62-52 decision.

  • Tough play is key for Eagles

    OKOLONA - Lee Barger hasn’t had a lot of reasons to smile during the first half of the basketball season.

    However, the past week brought a little joy to the coach’s heart. And the North Bullitt boys’ coach couldn’t stop smiling Friday evening after his Eagles defeated the Southern Trojans 56-48.

    Searching for a playing rotation after having as many as 15 players seeing action early in the season, Barger has found the key - toughness.

  • Tickets going fast as Valentine Gala draws closer

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - If it’s getting close to the Valentine Day holiday, it must be getting close to the annual American Red Cross Valentine Gala at Paroquet Springs Conference Centre.

    Tickets are now on sale to benefit the Bullittt/Spencer County Service Center of the American Red Cross. Tickets are $50 per person, $100 per couple or $400 for a table of eight. Half of each ticket price is tax deductible.

  • Regional wrestling on Saturday for Cougars

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – The Bullitt Central wrestling program will move into the post-season Saturday when they compete in the Region III Championships at the Hoops Sports Academy off Blankenbaker Lane in eastern Jefferson County.

    Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. for the 11 teams in the region. The finals will not start until much later in the day, around 6 p.m.

    On Tuesday, Jan. 20, I witnessed something that could only be described as one of the triumphs of America’s Democratic-Republic.

    On that day, through a live broadcast on msnbc.com, in The Pioneer News office in Mount Washington, with Joann Mitchell, I watched a man named Barack Hussein Obama—who was born of a black man from Kenya, and a white woman from Kansas—become the 44th president of the United States.
