  • Local efforts to help Wounded Warriors at Fort Knox for holidays

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Once a staple of the military, USO tours provided much-needed entertainment to troops away from home during the holidays.

    Shepherdsville resident Vina Leslie hopes to bring that Christmas spirit to today's soldiers. With help from many local businesses and organizations, including the American Legion Post 157, the "Wounded Warriors" stationed at Fort Knox were recipients of holiday cheer.

    Leslie's efforts began last year when members of her Kentuckiana Red Bells group decided to help soldiers at the base celebrate the season.

  • Hillview has some special friends at holiday time

    HILLVIEW - The Hillview Friends helped drive Christmas to Bullitt County.

    The group prepared Christmas gifts for up to 750 children, distributed during their second annual community Christmas party.

    Hillview Friends member Pam Watkins said the group distributed 250 gifts at aits inaugural party. Three years ago the group started by collecting gifts for 30 children in seven families.

    “Alone we couldn’t help the families as much, but together we can really do a lot,” Watkins said.

  • Holiday Helpers: Elvis brings joy to children

    Sometimes when we think of a red suit we bring to mind the jolly old Santa Claus.

    But recently there was a man in a red suit that did not appear to be Santa, but he sure brought smiles on little ones faces as though he was.

    On Wednesday Nov. 12,  Todd Bodenheimer - along with four other “elves” - visited Kosair Children’s Hospital.

    Todd had collected toys and books over the weeks, which he took to the children at the hospital.

    The staff and the children warmly greeted him.

  • The Reason for the Season

    Each December, the Hillview Community Center hosts the living Nativity at the corner of Hillview Boulevard and Brookley  Drive.

    This is the longest-running live Nativity in the county.

    The church members are joined by live animals for this production, attended by hundreds of visitors.

  • Sounds of the Season: Hebron Middle

    The Hebron Middle School concert and jazz bands performed a holiday band concert at Shepherdsville First Baptist Church.

    The show was directed by Hebron Band Director and Music instructor Josh Toppass.

    Songs included traditional Christmas melodies and revamped jazzy holiday mixes.

  • Holiday winner

    In an effort to boost student participation in eating lunch, Bullitt Lick Middle food services manager Denica Sanders and her staff decided to have a little contest.

    Each day a student ate, they got to put a ticket into a drawing for a large stocking of neat stuff.

    At the end of the promotion, Cody Farmer got to take home the top prize.

    More importantly, Sanders said the meal participation did increase during the month of December when the contest was being held. She said the school has good participation but this made the numbers even better.

  • Christmas at Pleasant Grove Elementary

    Pleasant Grove Elementary School had its holiday festival with Santa.

    Children enjoyed crafts, cookies and had an opportunity to shop for their family and friends.

  • Front row seat for Santa

    Youngsters at Roby Elementary sang  while Santa and his helpers got a front-row seat.

    The PTA sponsored a supper and a Santa Shop, as well as ssinging performances by the youngsters.

    Santa was also there to have his picture taken with the many youngsters who attended.

  • CGES has wish list from the teachers

    CEDAR GROVE - A standing tradition during the holiday season at Cedar Grove Elementary is the annual Christmas wish tree.

    Each year the school's certified staff members decorate a tree in the school lobby. The ornaments contain wishes from each member.

    Students and their families are invited to offer wish gifts of their own choosing. They can supply a wish gift for any teacher, not just homeroom instructors.

  • Christmas in the city at Lebanon Junction

    The Lebanon Junction Old Fashion Day Committee sponsored the annual Christmas in the City on Sunday.

    The celebration included the lighting of the city Christmas tree and visits with Santa, including refreshments.

    The community gathered to celebrate at city hall and the community center, with the celebration culminating in the square.
