  • Late rally gives the Lady Eagles a holiday victory

    CARROLLTON - You can take the North Bullitt Lady Eagles out of the Eighth Region, but you can’t take the Eighth Region out of the Lady Eagles.

    When veteran North Bullitt head coach Bill Robinette went looking for a holiday tournament for his team this season, he found one with a lot of familiar faces when he entered the North American Stainless Basketball Classic at Carroll County High School. Five of the eight teams in the event are former Eighth Region foes before North Bullitt was shifted to the Sixth Region three years ago.

  • Eastside holds off Zoneton's rally for crown

    PLEASANT GROVE - A late rally made it close, but the Eastside Eagles won the school’s first Middle School ‘A’ Division Basketball Championship on Friday with a 45-41 victory over Zoneton.

    The victory completed a sweep for the eighth-graders at Eastside as they won the title each of their three seasons as teammates, taking the two previous ‘B’ titles before securing the ‘A’ title this season.

    Eastside finished the season with an 18-4 mark.

  • Civilians are often caught at disadvantage

    One of the most thankless jobs may be an appointment to an agency, such as a fire board or a civil service commission.

    Probably few people understand the responsibility of these agencies, especially when questions are posed by those outside.

    In Shepherdsville, the civil service commission is a three-member body that listens to appeals of disciplinary action taken against employees.

    It is also the body that certifies test scores for merit openings.

  • Kentucky needs leadership, not partisanship

    To many people, it must have been a remarkable picture.

    After months of bitter campaigning, President-elect Barack Obama sat next to Sen. John McCain for a meeting a few days ago. They talked at length about how they could reach across party lines to discuss – and move forward on – some of the nation’s most challenging issues.

    If they can do this on a national level, why can’t we do it in Kentucky?

    The truth is: we can and we must. At a defining hour in our state’s history we need the same kind of bipartisan spirit.

  • First Bullitt County Challenge set for Saturday at East

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Local basketball fans can get a look at all three Bullitt County girls’ basketball teams in one sitting on Saturday in the first Bullitt County Challenge event.

    So-called ‘showcase’ events have become popular throughout Kentucky over the past few years. In these events, teams get together and play one game in a non-tournament format. Bullitt East will play in three of these style events in January alone.

  • Preston, Chargers experience wild ride

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - For most football teams that reach a championship game in Kentucky, the season is pretty much smooth sailing with only a minor hiccup or bump in the road along the way.

    Not for the Bullitt East Chargers in 2008. This season was one wild ride for the red and gold. This was a roller-coaster ride that was Badder than the Beast.

    Bullitt East did not start the season well. In fact, the red and gold had a losing record midway through the regular season. There were times that the team just didn’t play that well.

  • Failed conversion at :10 ends Charger rally

    LOUISVILLE - The Bullitt East Chargers didn’t quit when the season started with just two wins in the first six contests.

    The Chargers certainly didn’t quit at the end of the season, battling until the final 10 seconds on Saturday in the Class 4-A Commonwealth Gridiron Championship game.

    The outcome was a 15-13 loss to undefeated Bell County, but this Bullitt East squad left an indelible mark on its community with its heart and passion.

  • Tough losses dampen Eagles' holiday spirit

    BARDSTOWN - A tough setback in the middle of three games just before Christmas for the North Bullitt Eagles made it a long tournament for the green and gold in the Bearno’s Holiday Classic at Bethlehem High School.

    The Eagles, who have won just once this season in seven games, opened against the host team and playing without Travis Ridley the green and gold got off to a horrible start and never got back in the game as they lost 64-48.

  • The Art of MURDER

    Who killed Pierre Painter?

    That was the task at hand during the fourth annual Bullitt County Arts Gala.

    The audience had an opportunity to vote on its Artist of the Year but little did they know that their dinner would include MURDER.

    Playwright Bill Breuer provided the script for the cast  and the murder mystery was a hit for the crowd gathered at the Paroquet Springs Conference Centre.

    Local artists also had their works on display for sale prior to the dinner.

  • HOLIDAYS - DECEMBER 2008

    Dear Santa,

    I'm at work on Christmas Eve. Everyone has left except me and Mr. Barr. Get him something nice this year.

    I've tried to be good. I've even put in extra effort on The Pioneer News Web site. I'll try to keep my list small:

    It's my Grandma's 90th Christmas. Give her something nice to enjoy it, even if it's just family visits and a free subscription to The Pioneer News.

    Get something really cool for all my nieces and nephews, unless they were bad. My siblings might endorse coal and switches if you feel they are necessary.
