  • Lady Chargers ready to make a run at 6th Region hierarchy

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - By the end of February, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers have big plans of competing with state powers Iroquois and Butler.

    However, at the end of November, long-time head coach Chris Stallings is just hoping to get enough players healthy for a competitive intra-squad scrimmage.

    While the Lady Chargers have certainly not lost sight of the big picture, they have been slowed somewhat at the start of this season by a rash of injuries and illnesses.

  • Lady Eagles heading into the 'rebuilding' season of the ages

    HEBRON ESTATES - Lots of high school basketball coaches at one time or another have categorized their upcoming season as a ‘rebuilding’ campaign.

    For North Bullitt head coach Bill Robinette, the term ‘rebuilding’ might not exactly fit this winter. The term ‘ultra-rebuilding’ might need to be coined for what the Lady Eagles are doing for the 2008-09 season.

  • Hard work and determination will have to carry NB's hopes

    HEBRON ESTATES - The success of the North Bullitt football team this fall has put the basketball team a little behind schedule as the roundball Eagles start the season this week.

    That is not a bad thing for Eagle head coach Lee Barger as he wants to see all the teams at the school have success. But with six possible varsity players still playing football, it has cost the green and gold some valuable preparation time.

  • BC's heavy graduation losses mean lots of early questions

    SHEPHERDSVILLE -- ‘Practice hard and you get to play in the next game.’

    Lots of high school basketball coaches give that statement lip service every season. For Bullitt Central head coach Joe Pat Lee, that credo will have extra meaning this winter.

    After a season in which the Cougars had high expectations, but finished with a frustrating 8-19 mark that included a first round loss in the 24th District Tournament, Lee and his team have subdued expectations this season after losing pretty much every starter off last season’s team.

  • Lady Cougars are set for more improvement with young team

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - For the second time in three years, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars will battle with a team that has just one senior.

    That was not a bad thing when the program had Jesse Mattingly as the only senior and head coach Bryan Bates doesn’t see it as a hindrance this winter as senior Lindsay Hester will lead the Lady Cougars both on the floor and in the lockerroom.

    “It’s only one senior, but it is a very good senior,” Bates said before a practice last week. “She was our leading scorer a year ago at 13 points a game.”

  • MW's Lady Generals add to winning tradition

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Over the previous 16 years, the Mount Washington Lady Generals have dominated girls’ basketball at the middle school level, winning all but two of the Bullitt County championships during that span.

    This year, after not winning the title a year ago, coach Christal Scott’s team had a lot to play for. The coach was well aware that traditional would not help the squad against strong opposition from the teams at Eastside and Bernheim.

  • In a balanced region, BE has high hopes to reach top spot

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - There are a lot of teams with high expectations of winning the Boys’ Sixth Region Basketball title this season.

    Count the Bullitt East Chargers among that group.

    In a season in which ‘parity’ seems like the most popular word in coaches’ vocabularies, coach Troy Barr’s team has experience, size and depth.

    While there is a lot of basketball ahead for this group to decide its place in Charger basketball lore, there is little to argue that this could well be the biggest and deepest team ever in Mount Washington.

  • BC shows new look, new life in victory over NB

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - When things don’t go so well, high school basketball coaches often make changes in the starting line-up.

    Bullitt Central head coach Joe Pat Lee took that one step further recently when he started adding names to the varsity roster.

    One of those new names, freshman Caleb Craddock, has provided a stabilizing influence on the floor, giving the Cougars a new look and a new outlook on the season.
