  • Lady Eagles win in Shawnee split

HEBRON ESTATES – In a true rebuilding year, North Bullitt girls’ basketball coach Bill Robinette had several reasons to smile on Monday night.

But, of course, the Lady Eagles were far from where the veteran coach would like to be by the time district play begins in March.

Opening the season at home, North Bullitt clawed its way to a 49-20 victory over Shawnee.

Down 7-6, North Bullitt would score the next 17 points to take the commanding lead.

  • East's Preston has been on this stage twice previously

MOUNT WASHINGTON – A million things to do and only a few days to get it all done.

No, it’s not your holiday Christmas shopping.

It’s the job this week for Bullitt East football coach Doug Preston. Reaching the Class 4-A State Championship game will do that to coaches.

  • MW fire board votes to reinstate Dooley

MOUNT WASHINGTON -- Applause erupted from friends and family of suspended fire chief Michael Dooley Thursday evening after the fire protection district's board of trustees reinstated Dooley to his full duties.

Board chair Melvin Davis broke a tie vote to reinstate Dooley to his position as chief, although it was unclear as to when Dooley would resume his job.

  • Franklin Co. spoils BE's home opener

MOUNT WASHINGTON – An eight point lead early in the fourth quarter was not enough for the Bullitt East Chargers on Tuesday as they opened the 2008-09 season with a 50-47 loss to visiting Franklin County.

It was a top-flight battle between two of the area’s top teams. Franklin County was ranked 19th in the state in one pre-season coaches’ poll and either second or third in the always-tough 11th Region.

  • Woman charged in bus accident

HILLVIEW - No one was injured Thursday afternoon as a school bus carrying students from Maryville Elementary was struck by a car.

According to Det. Scotty McGaha, sheriff's deputy Brandon Gwynn responded to a call around 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in the vicinity of North Triangle Lane.

A car struck the back of the bus and then fled.

Hillview officer Mike Murdoch later located the fleeing driver.

Cynthia Denise Elmore, 41, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident and possession of an open alcoholic container.

  • East's defense more than BC can handle

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Thursday night. Friday night. Saturday night.

It didn’t seem to make any difference what night of the week it was for the Bullitt East Chargers last week as they rolled to an 86-37 victory over Bullitt Central in the first intra-county games of the season.

The contest was moved up a night from the traditional Friday date because of the Bullitt East football team playing the Class 4-A State Semi-finals at home against Calloway County that night.

It didn’t make any difference to the basketball Chargers.

  • Drinking age debate often ignores facts

Recently, the issue of lowering the drinking age has received significant media attention.

A group called Choose Responsibility has enlisted over 100 university and college presidents to sign on in support of a debate on the merits of the 21-year-old drinking age.

For thousands of public health professionals, researchers and community and youth advocates, this announcement, dubbed the Amethyst Initiative, is troubling.

Many of the arguments seem quite rational.

If one can fight for his country, why not be able to drink a beer?

  • Two arrested in record 44th meth lab bust in county

HILLVIEW - The Bullitt County Drug Task Force busted its 44th meth lab of 2008.

Task Force director Kenny Hardin said officers uncovered the lab Wednesday night around 8 p.m. while issuing an arrest warrant on a suspect at 198 Briarwood Lane.

Officers reported a strong chemical smell from the front doorway and asked the homeowner. Hardin said the owner eventually admitted that  meth was being manufactured in the house.

Officers located an active meth lab in a back bedroom. Hardin said officers cleaned the area and neutralized the ingredients,

  • BE's rushing attack is 11 players working as one

MOUNT WASHINGTON - When the Bullitt East Chargers started this football season 2-4, there was a lot of teeth gnashing and friction between a number of factions in the red and gold football community.
