  • Smoking ban needed

     Kentucky’s 2013 legislative session ended on Tuesday, March 26, and Frankfort was unsuccessful in passing legislation to make public places in Kentucky smoke free. In a state that leads the nation in lung cancer deaths and smoking rates, it is tragic that the General Assembly lacks the political will to protect its citizens from toxic second-hand smoke. All Kentuckians will pay the price for this missed opportunity to reduce smoking’s tremendous health and economic burden on the state.

  • Council doing right thing

     I am writing this correspondence concerning the budget amendment, recently approved by the Shepherdsville City Council. The discussion of this amendment has been heated and I believe many misconceptions have been created.

  • Expanding Medicaid

     Kentucky has the chance to provide health care coverage to Kentuckians ages 50-64. Expanding Medicaid will enable adults making just $15,000 per year to get the health care they need. Without the expansion, uninsured adults will continue to go without care or receive charity care in hospital emergency rooms. And since taxpayers pay for charity care, expanding Medicaid can save taxpayers money.

     I would like to commend the staff at Elmcroft of Mount Washington, an assisted-living facility for seniors, for being so helpful to our family. My dad lived there for a year and a half before passing away recently.

     Congratulations to the Kentucky General Assembly for passing Senate Bill 97, a long-awaited piece of legislation that represents a firm stand for education, Kentucky’s youth, and the long-term economic strength of this state.First Lady Jane Beshear, myself and many members of my administration have been working on the so-called Graduation Bill for five years now because keeping our kids in school until they graduate or turn 18 is one of the single-best things we can do for them.

  • Remove the car

     There is one way to remove drunk drivers from the road. We must remove the CAR. If the car was take from him and sold, he would have nothing to drive. If I went hunting or fishing with no license the courts could take my car, boat, gun (truck camper, etc.) what ever I have at that time. Is a FISH or DEER more important than a HUMAN?
