  • Selling of Beam doesn’t have to be bad situation for community

In the corporate world, no merger or buyout should be surprising.

It is normally just a surprise to those who are most affected - the employee.

On Monday, Beam Inc. and Suntory Holdings of Japan announced their plans to join forces.

For those who own Beam stock, it will be a great deal as they would be paid around $83 per share, up 25 percent over the Friday’s closing price.

The purchase price would be a cool $16.5 billion, maybe a little smoother than any of Beam’s finest bourbons.

  • Positive 2013 signs in state as session begins

FRANKFORT - As the General Assembly returns to the Capitol on Tuesday this week, it is worth taking one last look back at 2013, to review some of the issues my legislative colleagues and I have been studying in recent months.

We call this period the interim, and it begins each year during the late spring and continues through the holidays.

  • Roads should be better

Over the holidays I had the opportunity to travel across some of Kentucky’s highways and have to say that Bullitt County has THE WORST ROADS in Kentucky, HANDS DOWN.

I just don’t get it. How is it that Bullitt County has JIM BEAM, AMAZON, ZAPPO’S, PUBLISHER’S PRINTING, GORDON FOODS, LOWE’S and a new WAL-MART under construction (to name just a few) and ALL THOSE TAXES are going where?????

  • School board members make key decisions

It is already January and we are earnestly preparing for the next school year.

Even in a “normal” school district, there a lot of things that must happen between January and August.

I’m happy to say that BCPS is anything but a normal school district.

We are fortunate to have a crop of educational leaders and teachers in this district who are never satisfied with the status quo.

  • No matter who represents us, voice opinions

While it appears certain that there is no certainty on who represents Bullitt County in the General Assembly, it is certain that  you must make your voices heard.

The 2014 General Assembly is back in session this week.

Redistricting occurred last summer. Bullitt County had some changes in its alignment both in the House and in the Senate.

  • TOPS Tells How to Enjoy an Outdoor Winter Workout

MILWAUKEE, WI – Winter is here, along with the temptation to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa all season long. Chilly temperatures deter many from exercising outdoors, and while some prefer to head to the gym to keep up their fitness routine, seasonal activities can also offer great full-body workouts, says TOPS Club, Inc.® (Take Off Pounds Sensibly®), the nonprofit weight-loss support organization. Consider the following activities to break out of your routine and stave off winter weight gain.
