  • Think tank on ACT scores gets A+

If educators didn’t have enough on their plates, local leaders are pushing to increase ACT scores for students.

A think tank summit was held recently for Bullitt County educators. The message was simple - preparing youngsters for life after high school is the number one goal and a key indicator is the ACT.

This test has been used for years to determine college readiness. The state of Kentucky mandated that all juniors must take the test, free of charge.

  • A Veteran Is...

America’s war veterans come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and ages. Their collective experience spans two world wars and several foreign conflicts. They have followed war mules through Flanders Field, dropped from landing barges onto the beaches of Normandy, faced the icy cold of Porkchop Hill and trudged through the rice paddies of the Mekong Delta.

But, regardless of differences in makeup and experience, all veterans share a common bond - a brotherhood of memory and hard-won wisdom that helps define their character.

  • Buckner, not Bonds, played like Hall of Famer

Recently filmmaker Ken Burns released his addendum to the famous “Baseball” mini series, updating the history of the professional game over the past 20 years.

As exciting as baseball history can be, even to an average fan of the sport, the new Burns edition brought both good and bad memories.

As unfortunate as the game itself over the years, Burns presented a prevalent problem that will plague baseball and its precious history for decades: Steroid use and abuse.

  • Fatalities should not be reason to make changes

How many times has it been said that road improvements won’t be made until there is a fatality?

The number of fatalities on a roadway should not be reason for highway improvements.

But, if that is the criteria, the state should find the money to make improvements on Highway 61 and Highway 44.

Currently, plans are awaiting money to continue the improvements on Highway 61 from Pioneer Village to Shepherdsville.

  • WE deserve our own political party right now

With a love of political science dating way back to my elementary school days, I must confess that I don’t follow a lot of the national and international issues.

It seems that there are plenty of issues and problems existing within the boundaries of Bullitt County. That’s a full-time job.

But from the days of running for class president to writing a paper on Richard Nixon back in elementary school, politics has been fascinating.

If I were to ever get out of this great profession, politics could be my next stop.
