    MOUNT WASHINGTON - When Mount Washington Elementary fifth grader Tony Polichetti was just a year old, doctors found that he had an enlarged spleen.

    After Anthony Polichetti took his son to an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York for a bone marrow test he received some devastating news.

    He was told that baby Tony had a rare form of blood cancer known as juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia.

    BROOKS - School volunteers created a new rain garden at Brooks Elementary.

    A depression area between the school building and parking lot was transformed with the addition of native wildflowers, plants and trees.

    Bernheim Forest helped out with a number of donated native plants and seedlings.

    More plants were donated courtesy of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Resources Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort. Action Landscaping of Louisville also donated numerous flower beds.

    HILLVIEW - Since she was three months old Danielle Dafler has competed in hundreds of pageants and she has won nearly every title imaginable.

    That is, every title except Miss Kentucky USA.

    The 22-year-old Hillview native is hoping to change that this weekend when she will compete with women from across the commonwealth for the chance to realize her lifelong dream of taking home the coveted Miss Kentucky crown.

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Bullitt County Cooperative Extension Service has extended an invitation to its newest agent.

    Samantha Jeffries takes over as the county’s new cooperative extension agent for 4-H youth development.

    Jeffries brings three years of experience to the position, the previous two as an extension agent in Franklin County.

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Third grade Shepherdsville students offered a little warmth to patients at Kosair Children’s Hospital.

    Students created quilt tops and tile blankets for donation to Kosair as part of the program’s Cuddle Care Quilt Program, supplying comfort quilts to hospital patients.

    Student teacher Paula Kimball, working with Shepherdsville instructor Stephanie Warner, organized the donation as part of the overall SES third grade social studies unit on communities.

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - It might be the first time in Bullitt County Public Schools’ history where a live mascot has been permanently displayed on campus.

    Shepherdsville Elementary, home of the Stingrays, now hosts two live teacup stingrays.

    Principal David Pate purchased the new school pets through Feeders Supply.

The stingrays will swim in their own private aquarium located in the school’s front office. Pate said the aquarium was donated via craigslist.

FRANKFORT - With just a few days before the Nov. 2, 2010, election, Secretary of State Trey Grayson released, today, an election “Dos and Don’ts” list for Kentucky voters.

The list is designed to help voters understand Kentucky’s election process and to inform them of helpful hints before they go to the polls on election day.

    Despite falling on a Sunday, trick-or-treating in Bullitt County will take place the evening of October 31.

    In recent years some Bullitt cities made decisions to change trick-or-treat night to Saturday to avoid the traditional church day.

    Due to past confusion with the changing of the event, the county and all local cities have determined to allow trick-or-treating on its regular calender day in 2010.
