  • Strange to speak at state...

    FRANKFORT - Bullitt County will once again have a moment of positive statewide recognition on April 10, 2010, when David Strange will be the guest speaker at the Kentucky Historical Society meeting in Frankfort.

    The subject will be “Bullitt County Salt Making in the 1800’s and the Importance of Kentucky’s Salt Making Industry”.

    The Family History Workshop presentation “Researching in Kentucky Ancestors Magazine” begins at 10:30, followed by the “Kentucky’s Salt Industry” presentation.

    School to Watch: Mount Washington...

        MOUNT WASHINGTON – Only a hand full of Kentucky’s institutions of learning can call themselves Schools to Watch and they’re part of a select group of nationally recognized institutions all over the country.

        Four schools were named Kentucky Schools to Watch for 2010, and one of the them is in Bullitt County.

  • 2010 KidsFest another HUGE success

        The Bullitt County Chamber of Commerce hosted its eighth annual KidsFest celebration at Paroquet Springs Conference Centre on Saturday.

        Over 100 exhibitors were present to greet the largest crowd in the event’s history. Over 4,000 people attended the event.

        From watching a magic show to meeting up with Clifford the Dog, the young and old alike had plenty of activities to do and see on Saturday.

    Roby students take tour of country...

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - Roby Elementary fourth graders took a tour of the United States via PowerPoint.

        Their teacher, Tori Unser, created a class project tying in the slideshow technology with educational core content areas.

        Students created PowerPoint presentations with a minimum of 12 slides to discuss their individual state. They also prepared a one-page report on the state.

    VFW Post warms Brooks'...

        BROOKS - Brooks Elementary received a special winter gift from local VFW posts.

        New coats, scarves and hats were distributed to the Brooks Family Resource Center courtesy of the VFW Post 5710 and 8639 Ladies Auxiliaries.

        Brooks teacher Stephanie Thomas initiated the process. She noticed students exiting school buses without winter coats.

    DiEnno takes need to help others to...

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - When 14-year-old Gabe DiEnno watched the documentary film Invisible Children during an Impact youth service at his church in December, he got a glimpse of the poverty in places like Sudan and Uganda in the developing world.

        One of the things that stuck with Gabe after watching Invisible Children was that none of the people in the film were wearing shoes.

    FES third-grader shows older ones...

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - Hannah Ferriell didn’t act like a zombie or suffer from any stage fright as she stood in the Bullitt Central auditorium  Tuesday evening to compete in the Bullitt County District spelling bee.

        Although her stature might seem a bit miniature compared to the competitors, who ranged from the third grade through the eighth grade, the Freedom Elementary hung right with the others in her lavender outfit.

    United Way grant to assist TAPP

        For the past eight consecutive years, the Bullitt County Public School’s TeenAge Parenting Program has been the grateful recipient of a grant from the Metro United Way.

        The grant, in the amount of $8,705, is used to pay for the services of a nurse to come to the program one day every week.

        The nurse meets with each pregnant and parenting student on an individual basis.

        She confers with each student about their own health issues and the health of their child.

  • Food Check-Out Week

        The Bullitt County Farm Bureau celebrated Food Check-Out Week during Feb. 21-27. They celebrated the fact that in America the cost of food remains affordable.

        American consumers spend, on average, just over 10 percent of their disposable income for food, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. That means the average household will have earned enough disposble income to pay for its annual food supply in about seven weeks, said Kentucky Farm Bureau President Mark Haney.

    Grand Slam promotion

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - Everyone was dancing at Denny's on Tuesday... except the chickens.

        Denny's in Shepherdsville celebrated is second annual free Grand Slam breakfast day following the Super Bowl.

        The store distributed 922 free Grand Slam meals between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. despite six inches of snow and area school and business closings. Last year's total was 930.

        Among the patrons was Richard Mertz of Cedar Grove and Summer Taylor, 6.

    NB grad looks to make fame through...

        CEDAR GROVE - A Bullitt County native hopes to dance his way to national stardom.

        Dakota Smith, a 2006 North Bullitt High School graduate, has appeared on the MTV hit series, "Randy Jackson Presents: America's Best Dance Crew."

        Smith and his dance team, Royal Flush, made it through the first rounds and qualified for the main competition that began Feb. 18.

    BCPS' Jenkins interviewed for...

        District Technology Integration Specialist Susan Jenkins has comments on Converge Magazine’s website concerning teaching and technology. She was interviewed by Tanya Roscorla after following her along with several other Education Technology professionals on Twitter.

        Roscorla asked permission to interview Jenkins upon learning she was a BCPS TIS.

    Healthy Hearts Wear RED

        Paroquet Springs Conference Centre hosted to the third annual Healthy Hearts Wear Red luncheon, also sponsored by Bullitt County Homemakers and the Bullitt County Health Department.

        Along with lunch, patrons glimpsed Body Recall and Tai-Chi exercise demonstrations by the Health Department and fashion shows courtesy of Cato's.

        Guest speakers included Carolyn Davis discussing "Living with Heart Disease" and "The Importance of Chocolate" presented by Debbie Lentz, RD, MS, LD.

  • Kindergarten registration set for...

        Kindergarten pre-registration for all Bullitt County elementary schools will be held on Friday, March 19, from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m.

        Register at your child’s home school. Those assigned to the new Crossroads Elementary in Mount Washington will register at the central office on Highway 44 in Shepherdsville.

        Bring a birth certificate, proof of residence or driver’s license. By the start of school, each child will need an immunization certificate, a health care examination and a Social Security card.

  • Belcher, First Lady to honor woman...

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - Do you know of a woman who deserves recognition but would rather stay in the background?

        The First Lady of Kentucky, Jane Beshear, and the women who serve in the Kentucky General Assembly would like to recognize your efforts.

        State Rep. Linda Belcher said there would be an opportunity in March to honor those women.

        Bullitt Countians can nominate a woman who does special work but might not be seen on the front pages of The Pioneer News or on the 11 p.m. news.

  • Applications taken for $61,000 set...

        Bullitt County has been chosen to receive $61,847.00 in Federal funds to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county.

        A Bullitt County Board, made up of local representatives, will determine how the funds awarded to the county are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by Bullitt County service agencies.

    Zappos.com helps History Museum

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - A local company will help the Bullitt County History Museum purchase some much-needed computer equipment.

        And it was a suggestion of an employee that helped get the funding ball rolling.

        Stephanie Walls, solutions manager for Zappos.com off Cedar Grove Road, presented a check for $3,000 from the company’s charitable contribution fund.

        Employee Darrell Cruise has some connection with the history museum and knows the need for computers.

    Schools continue to show heart as...

    HEBRON ESTATES - Where there’s freedom, there’s hope.

    The Freedom Elementary community worked together raising $3,329.64 in donations for Haiti earthquake relief efforts.

    Freedom physical education instructor Susan Hatchett said the funding was distributed to the American Red Cross.

    The school had two special event days to collect funds, the first being Hats for Haiti. Hatchett said each student could wear a hat in school for a $1 donation.

    “We had some wild ones, too,” Hatchett said.
