    Burton, Benkert get to '...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Kandace Burton and Katelyn Benkert hope to fulfill their dream of performing in Nashville.

    Neither are singers. They are Bullitt Central senior students currently enrolled in the Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) program at the Bullitt County Tech Center.

    Both Burton and Benkert will compete this summer in the 32nd annual National Leadership Competition in Nashville, earning their trip by performing well at the state level.

    Benkert earned a state second place finish in Persuasive Speaking, while Burton took third in Job Interview.

    Guthrie brings civics to life for...

    CEDAR GROVE -- Fifth graders at Cedar Grove Elementary were treated to a living Civics class presentation with a visit from U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie.

    Gathered in the school cafeteria, fifth graders listened as Guthrie discussed the creation of the United States’ governmental system.

    Focusing on the importance of the checks and balances system, Guthrie explained the Legislative, Judicial and Executive sides to the federal government.

    “Your teachers fall under the Executive branch along with the President,” he said.

    SHEPHERDSVILLE — School groups may have another way to raise funds in the near future.

    And it will be a way to beautify the community.

    Due to a change in some of the allowable reimbursements in the litter abatement program, Bullitt County solid waste coordinator Larry Hatfield said he is looking at other ways to spend the allocated funds.

    The county is slated to receive $72,000 in state funds for 2009 to use on litter abatement projects.

    For the past year, Hatfield said the county would have to return about $28,900 to the state.

    LEBANON JUNCTION – Lebanon Junction’s railroad-town history is filled with intricate stories of bar brawls and shoot-outs eerily similar to stories of the old west.

    But Lebanon Junction Police Officer Col. Steve Hamilton wants to remind citizens that before they get caught up in the nostalgia of a bygone era, the colorful stories often came at an expensive price and weren’t necessarily as glamorous as they seemed.

    Problems produced by meth widespread

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – Meth: A word now synonymous throughout the country as a destroyer of lives, homes and entire communities.

    In Bullitt County community members showed support in combating meth issues and problems by learning more about them from local experts.

    About 70 Bullitt Countians attended “Meth 101 - A Community Awareness Program” at the Bullitt County Cooperative Extension Service offices, sponsored by Bullitt County Partners in Prevention.

    Old Mill tutor lets students cut...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - There's a new group of young, aspiring hairdressers at Old Mill Elementary School - and they tried out their skills on Instructional Tutor Nicki Bradshaw-Vormbrock Tuesday afternoon.

    Bradshaw-Vormbrock gave her students a special opportunity to cut her hair for the Locks of Love program that helps provide wigs for cancer patients.

    MOUNT WASHINGTON – Several local ladies of the Twelve Oaks subdivision got together at the home of Sharon Carroll last week to celebrate the Kentucky Derby with a special hat party.

    The party included beautiful hats, good food and lots of conversation.

    Take a cut for the Relay for Life

    CEDAR GROVE -- Reaching the goal in Alliance Entertainment’s first year of Bullitt County Relay for Life fundraising was a close shave.

    Alliance employees surpassed the goal by almost $500. The close shave was courtesy of Returns Department manager Tom Fay.

    As part of the fundraising incentive, Fay promised to have his hair and goatee shaved if the company met the fundraising goal.

    Derrick Sermonis, owner of D’s Barber Shop in Meade County, performed the shaving honors.

    Living History at Shepherdsville...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Fifth Graders at Shepherdsville Elementary enjoy many aspects of education during the annual "Living History Museum."

    Each year fifth grade students select a historical figure from American history to portray in the makeshift museum located in the school's cafeteria.

    Students dress and act as the selected figures, reading a biography of their character's life. Patrons have to step on a button located in front of each figure to 'activate' them.

    Business allows people to express...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON — Art is all about personal expression and local artist Debbie Mantell understands that.

    That is why she recently opened Express Yourself paint-your-own pottery studio at 10239 Highway 44 E in Mount Washington.

    Mantell was looking for a new life endeavor when she decided to open Express Yourself. She took a ceramics course several years ago and fell in love with painting pottery.

    With a flair for the artistic and a love for original pieces, opening a paint-your-own pottery studio seemed like a perfect fit.

    Bragging on Grandpa: Crystal clear...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Crystal and John Kesler were all smiles at the Bullitt County Judge/Executive’s office.

    John is the grandfather, Crystal the granddaughter. They lived together until recently when John moved to Bowling Green.

    The closeness of their relationship is obvious, never more so than when Crystal wrote about John, earning top honors in the 2009 Bullitt County Grandparent of the Year Essay Contest sponsored by AARP and the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association.

    Little Flock looking to grow, not...

    PIONEER VILLAGE – Word of the demise of Little Flock Christian Academy may have been a bit premature and erroneous.

    However, as attendance fell at the private K-8 school, there was reason for concern about the educational facility’s future.

    Principal Brian Trees said there should be no worry as commitments have been received to ensure the program will be around for years to come.

    100 and still going strong: Tarter...

    PIONEER VILLAGE - Becknell Hall was recently filled to capacity to mark a special celebration.

    They were there to celebrate the 100th birthday of a special individual.

    Mabel Tarter was the guest of honor, surrounded by loved ones from her sister to her great-great grandchildren.

    The Adair County native was born in Columbia on Feb. 16, 1909. She shares her birthday with actor Hugh Beaumont, famous as Ward Cleaver, the father on the television series, “Leave it to Beaver.”

    SHEPHERDSVILLE ee" Soon victims of domestic violence and abuse will have a safe place to seek help and guidance in Bullitt County.

    In a county where domestic violence incidents rose 40 percent this year, the initiative cannot come soon enough for some.

    The Bullitt County Woman’s Club, along with St. Aloysius Catholic Church and other community partners, recently banded together to form the community’s first-ever Bullitt County Center for Women and Families.

    Day of Prayer set for May 7

    The 58th annual Shepherdsville National Day of Prayer Event begins at noon on May 7, 2009, with the blowing of a Ram’s horn.

    On the 1st Thursday in May, this prayer event takes place at the Pavilion in the Shepherdsville West 1st Street Park by Salt River. This 40-50 minute event accommodates those attending during their lunch hour.

    Again this year, a child’s prayer will be prayed along with the area pastors.

    A random selection of prayers submitted will be printed as an insert of the program for the National Day of Prayer event held on May 7th.

    Wii bowling proves to be fun way...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Wii bowlers wobble but they don't fall down.

    Unless it's from all the hysterical laughter and fun.

    The Ridgway Memorial Library is hosting free Wii bowling each Tuesday for anyone 50 years of age or older.

    Wii is the popular gaming program that recently became the biggest selling game in history. Participants play games by mimicking the actual movements.

    Ridgway program director Charles Gruber said the Wii systems were purchased through the Grigsby fund, a grant received by the library to be implemented toward senior programs.

  • JAG graduate returns to tell others...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Katie Bell graduated from the JAG Program in August 2004, earning her General Education Diploma. Never in her wildest dreams did she think she would come back to JAG to encourage others and talk about money; but, she did.

    On March 19, 2009, Katie returned to the classroom to talk to JAG students about smart money management. Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a program offered by Bullitt County Adult and Community Education Program that helps individuals earn credentials, find employment and enter college and/or training programs.

    BCHS, Roby get traffic control on...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Over the years, the Shepherdsville Police Department has had traffic control officers working at Roby Elementary School.

    But, at times, the police officer was called away due to emergencies in other parts of the city.

    Now, the city is experimenting with having a person devoted to providing traffic control for not only Roby Elementary but also Bullitt Central High.

    Neal Cunningham, who most recently worked as a court bailiff at the judicial center for the Bullitt County Sheriff’s Department, was introduced to the city council.
