  • Adult ed, school system earn OASIS

    Two Bullitt County Public School staff members have been honored with Outstanding Achievement in School Information Services (OASIS) awards for district publicity.

    Adult and Community Education Secretary Valinda Reed received Second Place in the category of External Publications - Full Color for the Fall 2007 Bullitt County Community catalogue.

    Shepherdsville Elementary students...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE — With specially-made placemats and name tags, second grade students in Dionna Bickley and Beth Lahue’s classes were treated to a special meal.

    In honor of Thanksgiving, the students were served a meal of turkey and all the trimmings on the Tuesday before holiday break.

    Thanks to donations from Mark’s Feed Store, Bootleg BBQ and Ernie Norris, the students were able to dine in style. Parents helped to prepare some of the food and also helped to serve the students.

    Thanks through song

    The Bullitt Central choir performed during the community Thanksgiving service at First Baptist Church of Shepherdsville.

    It was part of the annual Fellowship of Concern Thanksgiving service.

    The BC choir will perform again at First Baptist Church of Shepherdsville Monday, Dec. 15, at its annual Christmas concert. The public is invited to attend. The concert begins at 7 p.m.

    Holiday helpers at Thanksgiving

    On Thanksgiving day, members of the First Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, with some assistance from the local Boy Scout troop from St. Aloysius, helped to serve over 325 meals.

    The volunteers prepared the meals and then delivered many of them. Many others came by the church to pick up the holiday feast.

    The members of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church continued their long tradition of serving the community on Thanksgiving day by preparing over 400 meals, many of which were delivered to those in the area.

    Scouting for Food another success

    Boy Scouts in the Lincoln Heritage Council collected over 350,000 canned goods as part of this year’s Scouting for Food program to help the less fortunate.

    The over 22,000 members of the 25-county area donated 50,000 service hours to the cause.

    The collected goods remain in local food banks, churches and homeless shelters.

    In Bullitt County, scout groups, like the one pictured at Overdale United Methodist Church, braved a cold, rainy Saturday to pick up thousands of canned food items that will help the community this holiday season.

    Comeback trail: Rash, North Bullitt...

    HEBRON ESTATES – Tabitha Rash and her family have become synonymous with raising and showing rabbits in the area.

    All three daughters of Butch and Yvonda Rash have been active in the sport.

    In 2008, Louisville would be home to the national convention of the American Rabbit Breeders Association, an event that attracts entrants from all over the world.

    Tabitha was looking forward to entering.

    Unfortunately, along came a train derailment in January 2007, and it wiped out her crop of rabbits.

    Clark honored by AARP for his drive...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON — Roger Clark Sr. admits he was struggling with life when he joined the Mount Washington Chapter of the AARP five years ago.

    He had been told by his doctor that he would eventually need an electric wheelchair, was struggling with his weight and was continuing to cope with his wife’s death that occurred several years prior.

    NBHS salutes the veterans

    North Bullitt had a special salute to Veterans Day with retired First Sgt. Pamela Cypert as the keynote speaker.

    The school’s JROTC, including the drill team, coordinated the program.

    Several members of the armed services were present, along with school system officials.

    Hunters find no barrier to their...

    CLERMONT - The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Bernheim Chapter recently hosted its eighth Wheelin’ Sportsmen event.

    The program offers handicapped hunters an opportunity to enjoy the sport with plenty of assistance from NWTF volunteers.

    NWTF Bernheim Chapter President Eddie Orozco said 36 hunters participated.

    With the help of donations, contributing sponsors and members from other area NWTF chapters, Wheelin’ Sportsmen clears paths for wheelchair accessibility, sets up blinds and offers forest guides.

    Jehovah's Witnesses...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - They came from miles away as part of a mission.

    Their mission was to construct a new place of worship.

    The Shepherdsville congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses had outgrown their space on Highway 44 East and needed a new place to worship.

    Once the location on the Charles Hamilton Highway was found, it was time to build.

    Over the course of several weeks, over 1,000 volunteers worked to build the new kingdom hall.

    “It is wonderful,” said Joe Hurst, who coordinated the effort.

  • Bullitt Central, Cardinal Dodge...

    Cardinal Dodge and Bullitt Central FFA Chapter announced that the two organizations raised more than $1,750 in scholarship and operational funds through the Hometown Scholarship Program.

    Through the program Bullitt Central FFA members accepted suggested donations of $5.00 from Shepherdsville community members.

    The donors were then invited to visit the dealership for a t-shirt as well a chance to win an all-new 2009 Dodge Ram truck.

    The donated funds are earmarked for FFA scholarships and the FFA’s treasury for operational and leadership needs.

    The Art of MURDER

    Who killed Pierre Painter?

    That was the task at hand during the fourth annual Bullitt County Arts Gala.

    The audience had an opportunity to vote on its Artist of the Year but little did they know that their dinner would include MURDER.

    Playwright Bill Breuer provided the script for the cast  and the murder mystery was a hit for the crowd gathered at the Paroquet Springs Conference Centre.

    Local artists also had their works on display for sale prior to the dinner.

    Thanksgiving Helpers

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – Dollar General Store in Shepherdsville Square and the Bernheim chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation once again combined forces to provide a Thanksgiving food basket for 40 families in the county.

    Retiring the Flag

    On Tuesday, Nov. 25, Boy Scout Troop 686 held a flag retirement ceremony on the grounds of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church.

    The flag that was retired had been presented to the troop by the church on Sunday, Nov. 9.

    LJ pre-schoolers find book buddies...

    LEBANON JUNCTION — Every Thursday Lindy Meyer’s Lebanon Junction Elementary fourth graders open the door to a classroom full of preschoolers and their eyes light up.

    The bond between the two classes is instantly recognizable.

    With story books in hand, the fourth graders quickly break off into pairs and locate their “book buddy” — a special preschooler with whom they will share the next 20 minutes reading and bonding.

    Thanksgiving lesson at Cedar Grove

    CEDAR GROVE -- Students at Cedar Grove Elementary gave thanks by celebrating a traditional Thanksgiving event.

    Students and faculty dressed as Pilgrims and Native Americans during the second annual school-wide event. Parents and grandparents were invited to attend for a traditional turkey lunch feast.

    Fifth grade students paraded through the halls in their costumes, speaking to younger students while remaining in character. Five students later performed a special play about the first Thanksgiving meal.

    Care facility welcomed into Hillview

    HILLVIEW -- A new business that is part of the national ResCare system has brought its services to northern Bullitt County.

    Community Alternatives Kentucky recently hosted an open house for its staff, its patients and community leaders.

    The firm has a day program and assists in finding in-home residency for adults with special needs.

    The company opened in a portion of the old Winn-Dixie in Hillview.

    Steve Hendricks, vice president of ResCare, said the enjoyable aspect of their business is to keep people out of institutions and in their homes.

  • St. Benedict youth help families at...

    LEBANON JUNCTION – The St. Benedict youth group collected food items to fill over 20 boxes for families in need for the Thanksgiving holiday. The youth group will also collect food items again at Christmas.

    Anyone wishing to help should contact a parish member. The youth will sell baked goods at Wal-Mart in Bardstown on Dec. 6 from 8 a.m.until 1 p.m. to support various youth activities.     Santa visits on a firetruck

    ZONETON - Santa Claus will be traveling through parts of Bullitt County this weekend on a firetruck.

    The Zoneton Fire Department has volunteered to assist Santa in visiting neighborhoods within their own fire district.

    Santa and the firetruck will travel to Pioneer Village and Hillview from 6 to 10 p.m.

    Saturday visits will include the rest of Hillview and Hunters Hollow, also from 6 to 10 p.m..

    Last week Santa made appearances along Zoneton Road and Hebron Lane as well as Fox Chase, Ruhl Acres, Deer Run and Lee Villa behind Auto Zone.

    A new team: Lewis, Whicker excited...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON — Terri Lewis is known for her happy disposition and belief that all children really can succeed.

    After spending years in the classroom as a teacher and a Bullitt County instructional coach, Lewis is now bringing those attributes to Mount Washington Elementary School as its newest principal.

    Lewis officially began as MWES principal last Monday, replacing interim principal John Sullivan. Sullivan stepped in when the school’s last principal, Jennifer Wooley, moved to accept a position at the Bullitt County Board of Education last summer.
