 MOUNT WASHINGTON - Old Mill Elementary students recently received a valuable education in American civics.

Twenty days before the general election, Old Mill students were given the opportunity to exercise a privilege most Americans take for granted. 

Students were allowed to choose which of the two major party's candidates they wanted to be elected president during a school-wide mock election.

 WASHINGTON - It was one of the most emotionally rewarding days of their lives.

That's what World War II and Korean War veterans said about their Oct. 6 Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., which was sponsored by Salt River Electric and Kentucky's Touchstone Energy Cooperatives.

 FRANKFORT – The Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) is once again preparing for an active wildfire season as lack of rain this summer and  increased fuel loads from spring storms could pose problems for fighting fires. 

 LEBANON JUNCTION - While the Marine Aviation Memorial Bell Tower now stands in it permanent home in Pensacola, Fla., the 30-foot monument recently visited a small town in southern Bullitt County.

 FRANKFORT - Agriculture Commissioner James Comer visited award-winning Wight-Meyer Vineyard and Winery in Shepherdsville on Sept. 17.

“I enjoyed getting to visit with my friends Jim and Sandy Wight and see their operation,” Comer said. “Wineries such as Wight-Meyer are putting Kentucky on the map among the nation’s leading wine-making states.”

 CLERMONT - For many military veterans, the journey home means a longer than expected recovery more than it means returning.

Many veterans bring home extra baggage in the forms of physical or mental disabilities due to a wide variety of stress-related reasons.

Bullitt County was located along the road for a handful of veterans now raising awareness of such issues as part of The Long Road Home Project.

 SHEPHERDSVILLE - Students at Shepherdsville Elementary may have fresh ink all over themselves...but don’t you dare pick on them!

 HILLVIEW - It never hurts to add a little extra insurance in the event of an emergency.

Community members feel that way about the Hillview Emergency Response Team, a collection of 26 official volunteer team members.

HERT was first developed as a volunteer organization a few years ago to assist official Bullitt County emergency agencies whenever possible with extra manpower.

HERT director Kenneth Bennett took over the program in January, with intentions of training members to assist in various tasks.
