SAINT MATTHEWS - Before the start of Cal Ripken District play on Thursday, Mount Washington Baseball All-Star Under-10 head coach Barry Gentry knew his inexperienced team would have to grow up in a hurry.
MOUNT WASHINGTON - The Under-10 USSSA Kentucky State Baseball Championship will reside in Mount Washington for the next year as the East Bullitt squad brought home the big hardware from the state tournament on June 26.
The ‘little’ boys of summer had their fun in the sun recently with a pair of baseball camps put on by area high school coaches.
At Bullitt East, coaches Jeff Bowles and Craig Sharpe had two sessions for three days last week. The week before that, Bullitt Central had a four day camp in the mornings.
In both camps, there was a time for work on fundamentals as well as plenty of fun and games.
8-year-olds - Jacob Agee, Matthew Bradley, Jaxston Decker, Jalen Dunnavan, Dalton Geary, Justin Haycraft, Donivan Perkins, Ricky Quiroz, Blake Smith, Logan Spears and Tanner Wilson. William Geary is the manager and assistant coaches are Steve Haycraft and Terry Bradley.
There was plenty of interest last week in a youth volleyball camp at North Bullitt put on by Lady Eagle head coach Ashley Byerley and her players and assistant coaches.
The second year coach had 60 young ladies taking part along with a handful of boys.
The group got to work on learning the game with drills and fun activities as well as getting to play matches.
MOUNT WASHINGTON - A group of young basketball players who are expected to make a lot of noise in the coming years at Bullitt East, got a jump on that this spring as they won the Girls’ Kentucky AAU 7th-grade Division II State Championship in Lexington.
University of Louisville baseball players recently visited Pleasant Grove Elementary for Read Across America, the National Education Association’s annual reading motivation and awareness program.
The U of L players visited PGES on March 2, which was Read Across America day and the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss.
The players read Dr. Seuss books aloud and fielded questions from students.
HEBRON ESTATES - Christopher Badgett knows that a good referee must understand the rules of the game, how the game is played, what calls to make and when to call them in a strong voice.
"Basically you're controlling the field and this game," he said. "You're in communication with other referees and the coaches."
