  • East beats North in girls’ hoops thriller

     MOUNT WASHINGTON – Just call it an instant classic.

    Getting its final seven points from Lindsey Duvall, in her first action of the season, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers pulled out a 60-57 win on Friday over Sixth Region rival North Bullitt in a contest played before over 2,000 fans in the Chargers’ Den.

    Throughout the second half, the margin was never more than five points either way. In fact, Bullitt East never led by more than the final margin.

  • Chargers repel late North Bullitt rally to win 80-71

     MOUNT WASHINGTON – No coach ever thinks that any lead is big enough and that was certainly the case for Bullitt East mentor Bob Blackburn as his team surged to a 21-point first half lead against arch-rival North Bullitt in front of a huge crowd on Friday.

    Blackburn knew that his former assistant coach, North Bullitt head man Korey Craddock, would force the Eagles back into contention.

  • Bullitt Central makes it a home sweet homecoming

     SHEPHERDSVILLE -- When you have a team that is peaking at tournament time, you have a happy coach.

    On Friday evening, Bullitt Central basketball coach Joe Pat Lee was a happy man.

    His Cougars continued its winning ways the past three weeks as Bullitt Central secured a 76-64 victory over a solid Holy Cross team.

    Not really concerned about the opponent, Lee is very pleased with the improvements made by his players at the perfect time of the year.

  • Zoneton cheerleaders win regionals, 10th in state

     Coach Mallory Vice said the entire season for the Zoneton Middle cheerleaders was dedicated to strength, survival and fighting.

    As a team, the group supported a coach whose life was touched by a family member passing away after a 10-year battle with breast cancer. 

    This year, coaches Nicole Henry, Karissa Lewis and Vice  pushed the squad’s routine and cheerleaders to be inspirational and embody three characteristics.

  • BE falls early at state bowling

      LEXINGTON – On Friday at the Kentucky High School Bowling Championships at Collins Eastland Lanes, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers put themselves in a tough spot early and could never recover, suffering a first-round loss to West Jessamine.

    This was the second straight year that Bullitt East had reached the state finals after having runner-up finishes in the Region 3 Tournament. A year ago, the Lady Chargers won a match before losing in the quarter-finals.

  • Snow and ice get the best of local hoops teams

     SHEPHERDSVILLE – Snow and ice played havoc with the basketball schedule early last week with a number of games lost to the elements.

    As it turned out, just two games were played with Bullitt East going on the road and beating Moore 65-45 in a battle of Sixth Region teams. That was actually the only game originally scheduled for Tuesday, but after snow on Monday night, North Bullitt moved a game with Jeffersontown back 24-hours, but then did not play well in an 85-77 loss.

  • Swim teams show strong in new alignment

     SHEPHERDSVILLE – The team members practice together, but compete separately.

    That unusual arrangement has worked for almost a decade now and it continued this winter for the Bullitt County High School Swimming Program. The program is part of the athletic program for the three local high schools and head coach Joe White is paid by the Bullitt County Board of Education just like any other high school coach.

  • Central’s Calhoun set to play at Lindsey Wilson

     SHEPHERDSVILLE – It wasn’t mandatory for Bullitt Central senior Austin Calhoun to play college football with long-time friend Cameron Dukes.

    However, when Lindsey Wilson University in Columbia started showing interest in both players last fall, the dream of continuing his favorite sport with his good friend came to the forefront.

    As it turned out, Blue Raider assistant coach Powell Miller made an offer to both and within a few weeks of each other Calhoun and Dukes decided they were both heading to Columbia to play for Lindsey Wilson.

  • BE’s Troutman signs to kick at Morehead State

     MOUNT WASHINGTON – Bullitt County’s first family of basketball now has a Division I football player after Bullitt East senior Jalin Troutman signed last Monday to play football at Morehead State University.

    Growing up, Troutman of course followed in the family footsteps, playing basketball even after starting his days at Bullitt East. However, after two seasons and seeing a loaded group of classmates with that sport, Troutman opted to go in a different direction.

  • Eastside cheer squads win all the titles

     MOUNT WASHINGTON— Signs throughout the city displaying their congratulations to the Eastside Eagles cheerleading teams greeted the students when they arrived home from competition last Tuesday night.

     Not only did the two teams win Nationals in each of their divisions; both teams also won Worlds, a feat not common in such a prestigious competition.
