  • Frustrating late call knocks out Chargers

VALLEY STATION – Putting forth a superlative effort against the state’s top-ranked team, Bullitt East had a shot at the upset of Fern Creek on Wednesday in the quarter-finals of the Republic Bank Boys’ Louisville Invitational Tournament before a phantom walking call with 1.8 seconds remaining in the game kept the Chargers from getting a chance at forcing an overtime in a 52-50 contest.

In a game that had 11 lead changes and seven ties and in which neither team ever led by more than five points, the finish was anti-climatic for both teams.

  • The year of the twin in hoops

SHEPHERSVILLE – Nobody loves the fact that basketball players have numbers on their uniforms more than me.

While that goes for every season, it is doubly a good thing this season, the winter of the twins.

There are no fewer than four pairs of twins in Bullitt County basketball this season and three sets of twins are playing key roles for their teams.

  • Big third quarter lifts North past Central

SHEPHERDSVILLE – A two-point lead for North Bullitt at halftime expanded to double-digits early in the second half and the Eagles went onto beat arch-rival Bullitt Central 62-51 on Friday in the first of the two meetings between the teams this winter.

North Bullitt opened the third quarter with an 11-3 surge that moved to 15-5 late in the third frame. The Eagles were up 42-31 entering the fourth quarter and Bullitt Central could get no closer than six points (44-38) the rest of the way.

  • Lady Eagles have no trouble with Central

SHEPHERDSVILLE – There were no surprises on Friday as the North Bullitt Lady Eagles rolled to a 63-21 victory over Bullitt Central in a contest that was as lopsided as the final score would indicate.

North Bullitt rolled big despite the fact that senior guard Hailey Free, who has signed with Pikeville, missed the game after suffering a sprained ankle two nights earlier in a win over Fern Creek. Lady Eagle head coach David Marion was expecting Free to take the court again over the weekend in a game against South Laurel.

  • Mixed results for BE teams in Florida

MOUNT WASHINGTON -- The two Bukllitt East basketball programs spent the week between Christmas and New Years in Florida with each team playing three games, but in different locations.

    Chargers Win Two

Playing in Panama City Beach in Florida in the Marlin Christmas Classic, the Chargers split a pair of close games before romping to an easy win over the host school in the final contest.

First, the Chargers picked up a win as they turned back East Hamilton, a team from Ooltewah, Tennessee by a 71-67 count.

  • Central comes up short to Meade Co.

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Following a long but ride after the first day back in classes after the holidays, the Bullitt Central Cougars put up a good fight, but came up just short, falling to Meade County 62-57.

This one was close throughout as neither team had more than a five point edge at the end of any quarter.

Meade County was up 31-29 at halftime and then outscored the Cougars 18-15 in the third quarter.

  • Bullitt Central’s new gym scoreboards now in action

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Fans to Bullitt Central basketball and wrestling matches this season can get a clear view of the score and the game clock as the score now has new scoreboards that were installed recently.

The effort to get the much-needed pair of LED scoreboards was driven by Side Effects, a firm that did the work of getting the generous donations in place. Doing the work for Side Effects was Renee Clifton.

Now on each end of the gym are advertisements thanking those sponsors.

  • NB drops the hammer on Lady Tigers in third

HEBRON ESTATES – A 28 point explosion in the third quarter blew open a tight game and the North Bullitt Lady Eagles rolled to an impressive 71-50 victory over visiting Fern Creek on Wednesday.

North Bullitt only had a 30-24 lead at halftime but then came out and outscored the Lady Tigers 28-10 in the third period.

The contest was the first for North Bullitt since a Christmas trip to Florida during which the green and gold went 2-1, capping off a 5-1 streak in the teams’ two holiday events.

  • East, North tied in rankings for the Girls’ LIT

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Just how close are the girls’ basketball teams at Bullitt East and North Bullitt this season?

    Just say really close.

After the two teams had played 28 games this season, they were tied with identical Litkenhous ratings, the computer rankings used by the Girls’ Louisville Invitational Tournament to seed the teams for the event that will be played at Bellarmine University and Christian Academy starting on Jan. 23.

  • NB comes up just short of signature win

HEBRON ESTATES – The North Bullitt Eagles were leading by seven points with seven minutes to play on Tuesday against a very good West Jessamine team, but the Eagles couldn’t seal the deal, falling 52-47.

West Jessamine came into the game averaging over 80 points a contest in building a 9-1 record. Just the week earlier, the Colts had twice scored 90 points and then beat Bullitt Central 74-38 in the championship game of the Henry County Invitational.

The contest was the first for the Eagles since they went 1-2 on a holiday trip to Florida.
