  • BE girls come up short at the end to Presentation

        LOUISVILLE - It's never easy to start the high school basketball season on the road.
        It's doubly tough opening the season on the road when you return just one starter from the previous season.
        That was the situation the Bullitt East Lady Chargers found themselves in on Tuesday as they opened the 2011-12 high school season on the road at Presentation, a team that won 12 games last season and returned a number of starters.

  • Lady Cougars just overpower Dragons

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Bullitt Central Lady Cougars scored early and often in the season-opener on Wednesday against Sixth Region rival Doss.
        The maroon and gray scored at least 17 points in each quarter and used a stifling defense to crush the Lady Dragons 92-30.
        "We did some good things in that game," Bullitt Central head coach Bryan Bates said the next day. "We didn't know too much about them. We just knew what they had last year.

  • Two new coaches taking over local wrestling teams

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - After making a big splash when Bullitt Central first fielded a wrestling program a decade ago, the sport is now looking to reshape itself at the local level.
        That initial splash produced a pair of regional team championships and a bevy of medal winners at the state meet for Bullitt Central. Unfortunately, that initial surge couldn't be maintained and the school is now on its third head coach in as many years.

  • Cougars go toe-to-toe with an old region foe

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - Bullitt Central head coach Joe Pat Lee has loaded up on tough teams for his senior-dominated squad to battle this winter in hopes of preparing them for a big finish to their careers.
        The Cougars jumped right into the tough stuff in the season-opener on Tuesday when they played host to North Oldham, the second-ranked team in the Eighth Region. The Cougars led 30-29 entering the fourth quarter but with Mustangs connecting on 11 of 12 free throws over the final eight minutes, North Oldham pulled out a 43-37 victory.

     SHEPHERDSVILLE - For the North Bullitt Eagles, the 2011 football season was a satisfying accomplishment. For Bullitt Central and Bullitt East, there was more frustration than satisfaction. The good news is that the future could be even better for all three programs.

  • Chargers set to play all-comers during the winter

        SHEPHERDSVILLE - When Bullitt East standout Derek Willis opened up his recruitment last spring after initially committing to Purdue, it indirectly helped get some attention for some other Charger players.
        Just call it a 'trickle down' affect. Not that many of the other Bullitt East players wouldn't have gotten college attention, but the gaze by college coaches on the 6-9 Willis has also taken in the play of other Charger standouts.

  • Goeing looks to fuel 'new' Eagles

        HEBRON ESTATES - A new era will emerge at North Bullitt this winter as Brian Courtney takes the helm of the Eagle basketball program after nine seasons with Lee Barger as the head coach.
        Courtney was Barger's top assistant the past two seasons and on the Eagle staff before that so he knows the talent at hand and the foes that the green and gold will be facing this winter. Still, the new coach is looking to install a different style both on both ends of the court.
