  • Less Deel no problem for Lady...

SHELBYVILLE -- As concerning as it might be to have your leading scorer sitting beside you on the bench for most of the game, it is so exciting to see others step up.

In its opener, North Bullitt head coach David Marion saw his Bellarmine University-signee Lauren Deel sitting on the bench much too much against Collins High.

But, in the end, there was no reason for Marion to fret as the Lady Eagles were just fine in the 61-48 victory.

  • Lady Chargers battle to the end...

LOUISVILLE – It was a battle between two of the state’s top teams on Friday and when the dust had finally settled it was Male that had pulled out an 81-78 victory over Bullitt East.

Male entered the 2016-17 season ranked fifth in the state while Bullitt East was two spots behind the Lady Bulldogs.

Male had opened the season three nights earlier by knocking off defending state champion and pre-season number one Butler by a 68-62 score. Bullitt East was to battle Butler on Tuesday night of this week in Mount Washington.

  • East slips past Collins Friday

SHELBYVILLE -- New Bullitt East boys’ basketball coach Jason Couch got his first win in red and gold on Friday as his Chargers defeated Martha Layne Collins 58-51 on the road.

The foe was a familiar one to Couch as his former post was at Shelby County High School, the school on the other side of Shelbyville. Those teams are in the same district within the Eighth Region.

Bullitt East won despite shooting the ball poorly. The Chargers shots just 38.6 percent from the field and were only three of 17 from beyond the arc (17.6 percent).

  • NB wins, but Dunnavan to miss...

NEW CASTLE – Battling the limited availability of its leading returning scorer, Travis Dunnavan, the North Bullitt Eagles still managed to open the season with a road win, beating Henry County 58-46.

Dunnavan missed the team’s two scrimmages with a hyper-extended knee, but he was in uniform for the first game of the season. Head coach Korey Craddock didn’t start the senior, but early in the first half Dunnavan entered the game and scored 17 of his team-high 22 points before halftime as the Eagles bolted to an eight-point advantage.

  • Bullitt Central wins in opener...

BEDFORD – The Jessie Curry era at Bullitt Central got off on the right foot on Tuesday as the maroon and gray went on the road and defeated Trimble County 77-51.

An opening win might have been a little more than the ultra-young and inexperienced Cougars could have hoped for at this early stage, especially when the team’s only returning player with varsity experience, senior Danny Goldsmith, was held to just four points after going to bench after two early fouls.

  • Graham scores 33 as Lady Cougars...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – When Josh Cravens took over the Bullitt Central girls’ basketball program in May the schedule for the upcoming season was pretty well set.

Needless to say, if he had made the schedule, the Lady Cougars would not have opened the season Tuesday on the road at Trimble County. Bullitt Central has just one returning starter and only three players with any varsity experience while the Lady Raiders return most of its roster from the team that won the Eighth Region title a year ago.

  • Chargers falter late; Lady...

BOWLING GREEN – The Bullitt East Chargers’ lack of experience may have showed a little in the season-opening game Tuesday at Warren Central High School.

Bullitt East built a 17-point lead in the first half and still had the upper hand at 45-41 entering the fourth quarter before Warren Central rallied to win 62-57.

  • BE’s Renneisen all Aces with...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – No doubt about it. Bullitt East softball standout Lindsey Renneisen was all ‘Aces’ with Evansville University.

It was over a year ago that the Lady Charger senior committed to the ‘Aces’ and then a few weeks ago she made it all official, signing the NCAA Division I paperwork with the school in a ceremony in the Bullitt East Media Center.

Even with the early commitment, Renneisen never wavered from wanting to play for Evansville.

  • Despite heavy losses, Eagles...

HEBRON ESTATES – Every coach expects graduation losses, that is just part of coaching high school sports.

What coaches don’t like is when athletes transfer out the day before pre-season practice is set to start.

North Bullitt head coach Korey Craddock got both the expected and the unexpected since the end of last season.

  • Deel ready to lead Lady Eagles...

HEBRON ESTATES – As the North Bullitt Lady Eagles get ready to open the 2016-17 season on Saturday with a game at Shelby County against Martha Layne Collins High School, the starters and rotation are starting to fall into place for head coach David Marion.

After suffering some key graduation losses, including four of the top six players from a year ago, there were plenty of openings for players who wanted to work hard and impress the coaching staff in the pre-season.
