  • Male pulls away late to beat...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – The Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament last week at Bullitt East got just the final everyone was expecting, but a hot-shooting Male squad pulled away late to record a 74-53 victory over the host team to claim the tallest trophy.

Just three weeks earlier, Bullitt East had traveled to Preston Highway and played the state’s pre-season number five squad to within an 81-78 final.

  • Lady Eagles lose the battle to...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – A virus that moved through the North Bullitt Lady Eagle basketball team side-tracked any hopes the squad had of making a strong showing in the Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament at Bullitt East.

Already facing a loaded bracket of teams, the Lady Eagles had absolutely no chance in Monday’s opening game of the 16-team event when the illness sidelined North Bullitt’s two best players – senior Lauren Deel and junior Hailey Free.

  • All area teams hitting the road...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – After a few days off for Christmas, five of the six area basketball teams will be back in action this week as the holiday tournament merry-go-round continues.

The Bullitt Central Lady Cougars, after playing at LaRue County last week, will not be playing any games this week. The team will return to action on next Tuesday with a game at North Oldham and will then be part of a key boy/girl doubleheader against 23rd District rivals Moore at home on Friday, Jan. 6.

  • Chargers get the best of...

BUCKNER – In this new computer age, coaches now rarely use the word ‘rebuilding.’ Instead, the new word is a ‘reboot.’

Well for the Bullitt East Chargers, last week’s championship game in the Pegasus Sports Network Best in Hoops Tournament at Oldham County was a reboot of a reboot.

  • Bullitt Central heads to break...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – After starting the season with just one win in six outings, including the fact that four of the five losses were by at least 18 points, it might have seemed a long shot for the Bullitt Central Cougars to reach four wins by the end of the season.

Don’t fret Cougar fans. Bullitt Central won three games in three days before taking a week off for Christmas. Coach Jessie Curry’s team is now 4-5 and preparing for a trip to Allen County-Scottsville this week for the programs’ only holiday tournament appearance.

  • Hebron wins first ‘A’ title

BERNHEIM – It was Toney Time on Thursday in the championship game of the 2016 Boys’ Bullitt County Middle School Basketball Tourney ‘A’ Division.

After Eastside had scored the final five points of the fourth quarter within the final 15 seconds, Hebron turned the game over to T.J. Toney in the extra frame.

The athletic Toney scored nine of his game-high 30 points in the three-minute overtime period and Hebron won what is believed to be its first ‘A’ Division basketball title ever with a 61-56 victory.

  • Eastside grabs ‘B’ division...

BERNHEIM – Holding Hebron scoreless in the third quarter, the Eastside Eagles pulled away from a 25-18 halftime advantage to beat the Panthers 55-28 in the championship game of the 2016 ‘B’ Division of the Bullitt County Middle School Basketball Tournament.

The contest capped the six-team post-season tournament for the area middle schools. The tournament this year was played at Bernheim Middle School.

  • East gets impressive win over...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – For just over half a game this season, first-year Bullitt East head coach Jason Couch has had his full complement of players.

First, senior Konnor Polson and Derrick Donigan were out. When they both returned for the Pleasure Ridge Park game last Tuesday, the Chargers were at full strength right up until the time that senior Conner Green went down with a sprained ankle.

  • Lady Eagles win, but Eagles fall...

HEBRON ESTATES -- Seconds into Friday night’s basketball game against Holy Cross, North Bullitt head coach David Marion felt it would be one of those nights.

Yes, his Lady Eagles defeated Holy Cross 63-43.

But, it was far from the performance Marion wants out of his team.

“”We didn’t focus,” said Marion. “We weren’t intense.”

No matter the combination, Marion was not pleased with his team’s performance.

  • East ready to host big holiday...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Basketballs will be bouncing all across the area the next two weeks as the holiday hoops tournament season takes hold for all six of the area basketball programs.

This week, five of the six will be playing in area events (The Bullitt Central boys do not play this week) while during the week between the two major holidays, two of the area teams will be heading out of state while three more will be playing within the state (the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars do not play during that week).
