MOUNT WASHINGTON - Nine days can make a lot of difference in the life of a high school volleyball team - just ask the squads at North Bullitt and Bullitt East.

On Thursday, the two squads squared off against each other in Mount Washington just nine days after playing an epic match that wasn’t decided until North Bullitt scored the final four points of the match to win the third game 26-24. In the quick rematch, it was all North Bullitt as coach Jennette Pryor’s team rolled to a 25-20, 25-10 victory.

  • East flashes soccer lightning

MOUNT WASHINGTON - It took three hours to play 50 minutes of soccer last week before the Bullitt East Lady Chargers derailed North Bullitt by a 10-0 score.

This was quite a turnaround from last season when the two teams tied at 1-1 in the regular season and then played a spirited game in the district tournament that Bullitt East won 1-0.

SHEPHERDSVILLE - Patrick Neel wasn’t a soccer player during his school days, but he became familiar with the sport when his son, who is now 9-years old, starting competing in the game.

That led to Neel becoming an assistant soccer coach at Bullitt Central three seasons ago under then head coach Neal Cox. When Cox stepped down in the spring, Neel took over the job at the top of the largest of the Lady Cougars sports programs.

HEBRON ESTATES - The final stat sheet will show Martha Layne Collins High School pulling away from North Bullitt with 27 points in the second half, but this game was decided in the first half when the Eagles squandered two golden scoring opportunities that could have put them in the driver’s seat at halftime.

Instead, North Bullitt was down 14-13 at the intermission. With 20 points in the third quarter, the Titans, the state’s 8th-ranked team in Class 4-A, rolled to a 41-13 victory.

SHEPHERDSVILLE - Heading into the annual showdown The War, Bullitt East head coach Doug Preston had a simple mantra for the week, telling his players that nothing was going to be given to them, that they had to go out and take the victory.

The Chargers did just that on Friday, snapping a two-game losing streak in The War with a 36-25 victory over Bullitt Central in the annual game for bragging rights in the county.

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The War is in the history books for another year and just what did we learn from Bullitt East’s 36-25 victory?

First and foremost we learned what we have been told since we old enough to point to a television set while the game was in progress and what coaches have preached, but probably didn’t always believe themselves - that in big rivalry games like The War, you can throw out the records and what all the fans think will happen. In these battles emotion plays an extra big role.
