  • Central starts fast but then...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – A quick start in the Valley Invitational was good for the Bullitt Central Cougars, but playing two games on the third day of the double-elimination event was more than the maroon and gray could handle.

After outscoring their first two opponents in the seven-team field 23-1, the Cougars fell in the championship game of the winner’s bracket 8-1 to eventual tournament champion Christian Academy. A few hours later, the maroon and gray lost to Spencer County 13-4 and finished third in the field.

  • Outdoor track seasons start for...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The outdoor track season got started last week for all three Bullitt County programs as they all went in different directions.

With the way the school schedule falls this week, the opening meets will serve as more a tune-up. The real season will begin when school resumes next Monday.

This will be a short season for track in Kentucky this year. The state championships have been moved up a week, to May 22-23 because the University of Louisville is hosting an NCAA Regional meet on the traditional weekend for the Kentucky state high school championships.

Coaches of both teams said they have been very impressed with how successful their teams have been in short time periods.

  • Tough foes lead to tough losses...

HEBRON ESTATES - North Bullitt baseball coach Brian Wise has told his team that they will schedule anybody, anywhere, anytime this spring.

In week one of the 2009 season that meant games against two of the top five teams in the state. While battling teams from that level might pay dividends in the long run, it can cause some growing pains in the short term. That was the case as the Eagles lost to both St. Xavier and Eastern last week.

Overall, the green and gold were 1-2 before heading to Tennessee this week for a spring break tournament.

SHEPHERDSVILLE - With a team that starts just about as many middle school players as it does high school players, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars needed an early season confidence boost.

The game last just three innings as Bullitt Central scored 12 times in the first inning and then four more in the bottom of the second. The Lady Cougars did not even bat in the bottom of the third.

  • Just how good have 6th Region...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - When Bullitt County’s three high schools were realigned into the Sixth Region in 2005, the general consensus was that, at least at the beginning, the local programs would be able to compete better against the girls’ programs in western Jefferson County than against the boys’ sports.

While that might still turn out to be the case in the big picture, it has been nearly impossible to keep up with the best girls’ basketball teams in the Sixth Region.

  • Mixed results for East baseball...
