  • Bullitt County Swimming: Three...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - High school swimming is still in its infancy in Bullitt County, but for the third straight year there is an overall program that encompasses all three schools.

    Under the direction of Laura Flischel, the 27 local swimmers practice and compete in the same meets. It is in the meets that the swimmers break down and compete for their own schools.

    This year, 17 of the swimmers represent Bullitt East while North Bullitt and Bullitt Central each have five team members.

  • Snow and ice send local teams...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The week that never happened.

    That is pretty much the way last week will be remembered by area high school sports fans.

    Other than a single game last Monday with the Bullitt East Chargers beating North Oldham 76-73, there were no games played in Bullitt County. The ‘no school, no games’ rule was put into affect because of the ice and snow as well as the lack of electricity.

  • Chargers too hot for Eagles

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The word ‘ugly’ is often used in the vernacular of sports.

    After watching Bullitt East and North Bullitt play on Friday, you might have to come up with a word uglier than ‘ugly’ to help describe an overly long game that involved 66 fouls and 85 foul shots. Other than Bullitt East fans pleased with the 87-67 victory, nobody was throwing around words like ‘beautiful’, ‘graceful’ or even ‘workmanlike’ after this boring contest.

  • BC's football turnaround...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - If football becomes a consistently successful program at Bullitt Central over the next few decades, then historians can point to the 2008 season as the turning point from years of losing records.

    For the first time since 1990, the Cougars produced a winning record, going 8-3 against a top-flight schedule. More importantly, coach Danny Leasor’s team was competitive night in and night out even against the best teams that they faced.

  • Walls, Bennett heading BC's...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - With three weeks remaining until the regional tournament, the Bullitt Central wrestling program is putting the final pieces in place for a big finish.

    While there are still some question marks in coach Josh Durham’s program, there is no doubt that seniors Jeremiah Walls and Akeem Bennett are the top wrestlers with the best chance for post-season success.

    Still, that was the expected news when the season began after Walls finished third at 160-pounds last year at the Kentucky State Wrestling Championships while Bennett was sixth at 140-pounds.

  • Eagles won and had more fun...

    HEBRON ESTATES - The final record was the same as a year ago and the North Bullitt Eagles had the same results in the post-season, but there was one big difference between 2007 and 2008 for veteran head coach Brett Newton.

    This past season, it was an enjoyable campaign for Newton.

    “It was much more enjoyable,” Newton said last week at the school. “For the most part the kids got along better. We didn’t have as much class-consciousness. Most of the starting positions were seniors because of our small junior class.”

  • BE-BC girls' showdown set...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - With less than a month remaining in the regular season for area high school basketball teams, the final push for the top spots is still up in the air on both the boys’ and girls’ brackets in the 24th District.

    This year’s 24th District Tournament, the fourth under this alignment, will be hosted by North Bullitt starting on Monday, Feb. 23. For the first time ever, the entire event will be conducted in the month of February.

  • Football honors are rolling in...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The 2008 high school football season is in the rear view mirror at this point, but awards from the most successful season ever for local football keep rolling in.

    Back in December, North Bullitt senior Dalton Cissell was named to the Associated Press All-State Football Team. He is the first, first-team All-State selection in Eagle history. In the past, both Kevin Crisp (1996) and Nick Valadez (2001) were selected second-team All-State honors (in the coaches’ voting).

  • Lady Chargers set to face state...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The Bullitt East Lady Chargers, winners of eight of their past nine games, will face the ultimate challenge on Tuesday when they travel into Jefferson County to take on Iroquois, the state’s top-ranked girls’ basketball team.

    (It is hoped that the two teams will play, but it will only happen if both school systems are back in class that day.).
