  • Bullitt Central sweeps pair of...

    HEBRON ESTATES - The Bullitt Central Cougars’ new look and new attitude picked up victory number one on Friday as the maroon and gray run and gunned their way past the North Bullitt Eagles 84-82.

    This was the third meeting of the season between the two rivals, but it was by far the most offensive. Three weeks earlier, in the seventh-place game of a tournament at LaRue County, North Bullitt had pulled out a 52-51 win. Bullitt Central won the earlier regular season contest 78-60.

  • Lady Chargers pull away late

    HEBRON ESTATES - After a slow start, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers found the correct gear on Friday, pulling away from arch-rival North Bullitt over the last three quarters to win 71-43.

    While this has been a heated rivalry over the past few seasons, this was not expected to be a close contest. North Bullitt has won just five games this season and they were riding a seven-game losing streak.

    Bullitt East on the other hand had won seven straight games and is ranked third in the powerful Sixth Region.

  • Bullitt County Challenge: BE...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Basketball fans had the opportunity Saturday to see all three local teams competing against foes from outside Bullitt County.

    The first annual Bullitt County Challenge was held for the girls on Saturday at Bullitt East. Unfortunately, the home teams came away with just a single victory.

    The three local teams hope to make this an annual event with each of the programs hosting the day of hoops during an upcoming season.

    No plans have been solidified for next season at this point.

  • Lady Cougars stay hot against...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - After a busy holiday season with two tournaments and then playing in a showcase event and a tough regular season game against Seneca, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars deserved a chance to come up for air.

    That came in the past two games as the maroon and gray got a chance to get reenergized for the second half of the regular season. On Friday, the Lady Cougars crushed an obviously outmanned Southern squad 80-40 and three nights later they wee back on the court and blew out Atherton 93-39.

    The two wins moved the Lady Cougars to 11-5 for the season.

  • Holy Cougars!! Central unveils...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - What a difference three days makes. Just ask the Bullitt Central Cougars.

    After playing one of the worst games in recent memory, a 67-28 defeat to 24th District rival Southern on Friday, the Cougars bounced back on Monday with a new look and a new attitude. Run and gun is now the mantra for the maroon and gray.

    Without any practice, the Cougars went back into action with basically no restraints on the offense. Head coach Joe Pat Lee said he wanted a shot at least every 12 seconds. He got it.

  • Fairdale once again a thorn in...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The Bullitt East Chargers picked a bad week to play bad basketball.

    Heading into action last week, the Chargers were the only undefeated team in the 24th District. By the end of the week, the red and gold had two losses and were left looking for answers.

    The second loss of the week came on Friday in a familiar spot as the Chargers fell to new rival Fairdale 47-43. It was less than a year ago that Bullitt East lost the 24th District final to the Bulldogs on a mid-court shot in overtime on the same court.

  • Chargers snap losing streak with...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Sometimes you have to laugh a little bit to get some serious work done.

    The Bullitt East Chargers did just that early last week as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a pair of victories. That action pushed the red and gold back over the .500 mark with a 9-8 record.

    The fun started on Monday when the team reported to practice. Head coach Troy Barr let the players conduct the first 30 minutes of the workout to the enjoyment of the whole team. A day later, the losing streak was history as the Chargers went on the road and beat South Oldham 67-58.

  • 2008 - A Year of Success

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - It was certainly a Wide World of Sports in Bullitt County in 2008 as local high school athletes made it one of the most successful years ever.

    The two mega-highlights came in two different sports, six months apart.

    First, the Class 2-A State Track and Field Championships saw North Bullitt freshman Helen Heines bring home the first state track title in 20 years when she surged to the front on the final lap and won the 1,600-meter race.

  • Be warned - this is not a normal...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - ‘I’m not going to write a Christmas column this year,’ I told editor Tom Barr earlier this week. ‘I can’t be bothered.’

    “I see,” my boss for longer than either of us would care to remember said. “Well then maybe I can’t be bothered to sign your paycheck this week?”

    ‘OK, time to write a Christmas column,’ I quickly decided, but I still held out hope.

  • Cougar football ready to step up...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - While it is not new news, it is now time that Bullitt Central can start looking forward to a shift from Class 6-A to 5-A for the next two seasons at least.

    The Kentucky High School Athletic Association made that decision back in August, but since it doesn’t take affect until next season, there wasn’t a lot of reason to talk about it. The only thing making the announcement so early did was allow schools to start the scheduling process for the next two seasons.
