  • Fairdale once again a thorn in...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The Bullitt East Chargers picked a bad week to play bad basketball.

    Heading into action last week, the Chargers were the only undefeated team in the 24th District. By the end of the week, the red and gold had two losses and were left looking for answers.

    The second loss of the week came on Friday in a familiar spot as the Chargers fell to new rival Fairdale 47-43. It was less than a year ago that Bullitt East lost the 24th District final to the Bulldogs on a mid-court shot in overtime on the same court.

  • Chargers snap losing streak with...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - Sometimes you have to laugh a little bit to get some serious work done.

    The Bullitt East Chargers did just that early last week as they snapped a four-game losing streak with a pair of victories. That action pushed the red and gold back over the .500 mark with a 9-8 record.

    The fun started on Monday when the team reported to practice. Head coach Troy Barr let the players conduct the first 30 minutes of the workout to the enjoyment of the whole team. A day later, the losing streak was history as the Chargers went on the road and beat South Oldham 67-58.

  • 2008 - A Year of Success

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - It was certainly a Wide World of Sports in Bullitt County in 2008 as local high school athletes made it one of the most successful years ever.

    The two mega-highlights came in two different sports, six months apart.

    First, the Class 2-A State Track and Field Championships saw North Bullitt freshman Helen Heines bring home the first state track title in 20 years when she surged to the front on the final lap and won the 1,600-meter race.

  • Be warned - this is not a normal...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - ‘I’m not going to write a Christmas column this year,’ I told editor Tom Barr earlier this week. ‘I can’t be bothered.’

    “I see,” my boss for longer than either of us would care to remember said. “Well then maybe I can’t be bothered to sign your paycheck this week?”

    ‘OK, time to write a Christmas column,’ I quickly decided, but I still held out hope.

  • Cougar football ready to step up...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - While it is not new news, it is now time that Bullitt Central can start looking forward to a shift from Class 6-A to 5-A for the next two seasons at least.

    The Kentucky High School Athletic Association made that decision back in August, but since it doesn’t take affect until next season, there wasn’t a lot of reason to talk about it. The only thing making the announcement so early did was allow schools to start the scheduling process for the next two seasons.

  • State Football Honors

    Bullitt County was not only represented on the field, but also off of it and at halftime last Saturday during the Commonwealth Gridiron Football Tournament.

    Before the Class 4-A Championship game, North Bullitt senior Dalton Cissell read the Sportsmanship Creed of the KHSAA. After that, Cissell flipped the coin before the Bullitt East-Bell County state final.

    At halftime of the Class 4-A contest, Cissell was presented with the Kentucky Footbal Coaches Association Player of the Year award in Class 4-A, Region 4, an honor he shared with Marion County senior Eric Miles.

  • Holy Cross blitzes NB on Monday

    HEBRON ESTATES - The first day back at school after the Christmas break didn’t end well for the North Bullitt Lady Eagles as they were rocked at home by Holy Cross 60-37.

    This one was over before it really began as the Lady Cougars jumped on top 16-1 in the first quarter and never looked back. North Bullitt didn’t get its first basket of the game until senior Ashley Goeing scored 45 seconds into the second quarter.

  • Outback 5th/6th Region showcase...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON – The Bullitt County girls did it two weeks ago and this Saturday it will be the boys turn to showcase local basketball as all three of the area programs will converge on Bullitt East for the Outback Steakhouse 5th/6th Challenge.

    The first-year event is the brain child of Bullitt East head coach Troy Barr to highlight local basketball.

    Fans can see all three of the local teams for one admission price against three teams from the Fifth Region. Actually, this year, the three opponents are from Hardin County.

  • NB-BC play round two, but not...

    HODGENVILLE - Any port in a storm.

    That is the way that both North Bullitt and Bullitt Central looked at Tuesday's meeting in the seventh-place game of the National Guard Holiday Classic at LaRue County High School.

    Each of the local teams is struggling mightily this season and the outcomes from the first two days of the eight-team tournament had not improved their outlook. Each team had just one win this season coming into the contest.

  • Southern stuns Chargers; Lady...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - With a chance to take a huge step toward the top seed in the 24th District Tournament, the Bullitt East Chargers instead put themselves in a dangerous hole on Tuesday when they lost a 65-60 decision to Southern.

    Coach Troy Barr's team was the only undefeated team remaining in the boys' bracket and the Chargers had already beaten the Trojans 61-46 less than a month earlier in Jefferson County.
