  • Charger soccer earns first...

MOUNT WASHINGTON - For the first time in the program’s history, the Bullitt East Chargers were ranked last week among the top-25 teams in the state coaches’ poll.

That goes hand-in-hand with the Chargers posting a 13-3-2 record and facing three teams that have been ranked in the coaches’ poll at some time this season. The Chargers recently beat Waggener 1-0 and they tied perennial district kingpin Bethlehem 1-1 at home back on Sept. 10. There was also a 2-0 loss to Elizabethtown.

  • Youth deer season a time for...

Kentucky's youth-only deer season is coming up Oct.10-11.

Safety always comes first, but for adult mentors, patience isn't far behind.

Hunting for big bucks or to fill the freezer may be an adult hunter's goal, but kids are out there mostly to have fun.

"I would recommend more than anything to make sure the young ones enjoy it," said Will Connelly, a hunter training officer with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. "You shouldn't put pressure on them to shoot something."

  • To break or not to break? That...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - There really was no right or wrong answer back last winter when area high school football coaches and athletic directors were putting together schedules for the next two years.

The big question mark was that the Kentucky High School Athletic Association was giving the teams an option of playing ten straight games after two scrimmages or playing ten games over 11 weeks with only one scrimmage.

After this week, pretty much every team in the state has played six games no matter what option they took. It seems about equally divided between the two options.

  • Cougars can't overcome...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The defensive effort was inspiring, but that wasn’t enough on Friday as the Bullitt Central Cougars dropped a 14-0 decision to John Hardin in a battle for the top spot in Class 5-A, District 3.

John Hardin came into the game averaging over 400 yards of total offense through the first eight games of the season. On Friday, the Bulldogs managed just 203 yards and more than half of that came on three plays in the first half.

  • BE seeking to build on recent...

MOUNT WASHINGTON - The Bullitt East Chargers will close out the regular season on Friday when the red and gold play host to neighborhood rival Nelson County in the annual battle for the Bourbon Barrel.

Bullitt East head coach Doug Preston is looking for a good contest, if he can field enough players.

  • Slow start dooms the Eagles in...

HEBRON ESTATES - With very little to play for on Friday, the North Bullitt Eagles got off to a slow start and never recovered as they fell 33-7 to district rival Marion County.

The district seeding was already set for both teams before the game began. The Knights had already wrapped up the number one spot with wins over Bullitt East and LaRue County the two previous weeks. North Bullitt had lost to those two teams so was already locked into the number four slot.

  • BE home for first playoff contest

MOUNT WASHINGTON - A few weeks ago, Bullitt East coach Doug Preston told his players they were on the verge of being a very good football team.

That came after a tough road loss to Marion County, the team’s only district loss in Preston’s two years at the helm.

Last week against North Bullitt, Preston told the players they were getting even closer.

On Friday night, homecoming night was the game when he felt the team began to surge in a tough 10-0 victory over LaRue County.

  • THE GAME: 34th meeting in...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Game, the oldest football rivalry in Bullitt County will be renewed for the 34th consecutive year on Friday when the North Bullitt Eagles invade George Valentine Field to take on the Bullitt Central Cougars.

The two teams have been on pretty much opposite courses this season as the Cougars are 7-2 and have already secured a post-season play-off berth at home for the first time in 30 years.

  • North’s Goeings just...

LOUISVILLE - Over the past several weeks, North Bullitt boys’ golf coach John Hunt has been telling anyone who would listen that his top two players - Brandon Goeings and Matt Bloom - were the verge of knocking down some low scores.
