  • Franklin Co. spoils BE's...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON – An eight point lead early in the fourth quarter was not enough for the Bullitt East Chargers on Tuesday as they opened the 2008-09 season with a 50-47 loss to visiting Franklin County.

    It was a top-flight battle between two of the area’s top teams. Franklin County was ranked 19th in the state in one pre-season coaches’ poll and either second or third in the always-tough 11th Region.

  • East's defense more than BC...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE – Thursday night. Friday night. Saturday night.

    It didn’t seem to make any difference what night of the week it was for the Bullitt East Chargers last week as they rolled to an 86-37 victory over Bullitt Central in the first intra-county games of the season.

    The contest was moved up a night from the traditional Friday date because of the Bullitt East football team playing the Class 4-A State Semi-finals at home against Calloway County that night.

    It didn’t make any difference to the basketball Chargers.

  • BE's rushing attack is 11...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - When the Bullitt East Chargers started this football season 2-4, there was a lot of teeth gnashing and friction between a number of factions in the red and gold football community.

    It wasn’t easy for first-year head coach Doug Preston. This was a team with 19 seniors and winning was expected.

  • It's mat time

    Bullitt Central will host a major early season wrestling match on Saturday with the annual Bullitt Central Invitational.

    The Cougars will play host to eight teams including some of their toughest competition in the region. The eight schools taking part are Central, Ohio County, Shawnee, Bourbon County, Pleasure Ridge Park, Doss, DeSales and Nelson County.

    Bullitt Central, which already has wrestled against Oldham County and Fairdale this season, will have two squads entered.

  • Lady Chargers rally past BC...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - A high school basketball game is more than one quarter.

    The Bullitt East Lady Chargers proved that point on Thursday as they overcame an 18-9 deficit in the first quarter to roll past visiting Bullitt Central 62-39.

    In fact, the game was close for the whole first half as Bullitt East only led 25-24 at the break.

  • Bullitt Central opens with a...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - Getting a combined 23 points from Qualeatha Bennett and Lindsay Hester was just what the doctor ordered for the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars last Tuesday as they opened the 2008-09 season with an impressive 64-61 victory over Holy Cross.

    The Lady Cougars trailed early by eight points but then rallied to within a point at the end of the first quarter. Bullitt Central then led 33-30 at halftime and pushed the margin to as many as eight points in the second half.

  • Chargers set for fifth semi-...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - It’s certainly not to the point of being a regular occurrence, but the Bullitt East Chargers are starting to make a habit of playing in the state football semi-finals.

    This Friday’s game against Calloway County will be the fifth time since 1994 that the Chargers have played in such a lofty game. So far, the record stands at 1-3 against some of the best teams in the state.

    There are a lot of schools that have never played in a state semi-final and even fewer that have played in five over the past 14 years.

  • Calloway brings powerful offense...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - It will be a clash of two seemingly unstoppable forces on Friday when Bullitt East plays host to Calloway County in a Class 4-A play-off semi-final.

    Calloway County brings to town a high-powered offense that has been chewing up teams in western Kentucky this season. The Lakers are averaging 36 points a contest this season. Coach Josh McKeel’s team has scored at least 21 points in each of its 13 games this season.

  • THE CIVIL WAR: Chargers continue...

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The biggest battle ever for Bullitt County football supremacy played out in dramatic fashion on Friday as Bullitt East and North Bullitt went toe-to-toe in a slugfest for the Class 4-A, Region 2 title.

    North Bullitt got in the first punch, but it was Bullitt East that landed a series of haymakers in the second half as the Chargers rallied from a 7-6 halftime deficit to beat their arch-rivals 26-7 to advance to the state semi-finals for the first time since 2005.

  • KHSAA fumbles the ball in muddy...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - I’ll be the first to agree that the football season in Class 4-A, District 3 was a Perfect Storm.

    No matter how anyone in Jefferson County athletics or at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association could have planned for any contingency, the way things worked out in 2008 could not have been foreseen. One of the two major events that transpired might have been planned for by someone. Not both happening in the same season.
