  • Girls' Sixth Region...

    LOUISVILLE - Early season bragging rights as the top girls’ team in the Sixth Region will be on the line Tuesday when Bullitt East travels into Jefferson County to take on Butler, the 2008 Kentucky State Champions.

    The two traditional powers are the top-rated teams in the Sixth Region this season. In the pre-season coaches’ poll, Butler was ranked first in the Sixth Region with Bullitt East second. However, in the overall state rankings, Bullitt East was 10th and Butler was 24th.

  • Cochran a key soccer player for...

    Johnny Cochran, a home-schooled freshman from Shepherdsville, participated in the National Home School Soccer Championship with his Louisville-based team, River City Jaguars.

    The championship is held each fall in Fort Wayne, Ind., with teams competing from across the country.

    This year, the Jaguars competed in Division 2 for the Gold championship. They played teams from Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota.

    Cochran started each game at a forward and in the midfield. His goal in the second game against Kalamazoo came at a critical point in a 2-1 victory.

  • Thacker leads BC to state

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - With three runners amongst the top 20 finishers in Saturday’s Class 3-A, Region 3 Championships at the old River Road Country Club course, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars did something that even head coach Martin Tallent had not considered a few days earlier - they qualified for the Kentucky State Championships this Saturday in Lexington.

    It is the first time in at least 30 years that a Bullitt Central team had reached such a lofty goal.

    LEXINGTON - Both Bullitt Central girls’ coach Martin Tallent and Bullitt East boys’ coach Lenny Raley knew when the day began that their teams would not be challenging for even a top-10 finish in Saturday’s Kentucky State Cross-Country Championships on the new course at the Kentucky Horse Park.

  • Lady Generals start modern...

    ZONETON -- Once again, the Mount Washington Lady Generals have a winning streak when it comes to winning the Girls’ Bullitt County Middle School Basketball Tournament.

    The Mount Washington program has now won 13 of the past 15 titles and on Thursday the Lady Generals made it two in a row with a 41-29 victory over the Zoneton Lady Timberwolves on their home-court.

    The Bullitt County Middle School Tournament was sponsored this year by Schmid Funeral Home along with The Awards Center and The Pioneer News.

    HILLVIEW - Just two weeks after being a key part of a second straight State Championship team at Mercy, north end resident Madison Hardy kept the good news coming last Wednesday when she signed to continue her volleyball career at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

    Hardy is a life-long resident of Bullitt County who is the daughter of Mark and Leann Hardy. She attended St. Aloysius in Shepherdsville and  Hebron Middle before moving on to Mercy.

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - The dream became reality on Wednesday for Bullitt East baseball standout Brandon Alphin when he put his name on the dotted line to play next season for the University of Louisville.

    Alphin had committed to the Cardinals back in June during Bullitt East’s big post-season run that saw the red and gold reach the semi-finals of the State Baseball Tournament.

    Alphin becomes the first Bullitt County baseball player to ever sign a Division I scholarship.

    LOUISVILLE - The Bullitt East Chargers needed a nearly flawless performance on Saturday in the Class 2-A, Region 3 Cross-Country Championships at McNeely Lake Park in southern Jefferson County.

    They got it.

    MOUNT WASHINGTON - In a family with one of the best known sports names in Bullitt County, Bullitt East senior Jade Troutman is the anomaly, one of the few females in a lineage dominated by males, both past and present.

    ZONETON -- The Bernheim Lady Bruins withstand a late rally and despite scoring just two points in the fourth quarter, they beat the Zoneton Lady Timberwolves 21-19 in the ‘B’ Division Championship of the Girls’ Bullitt County Middle School Tournament.

    The teams had split their two regular season meetings so both teams knew that this would be a tough battle.
