  • WEEKEND FOOTBALL UPDATE:...

    Thanks to three second-quarter touchdowns, the Bullitt East Chargers kicked off the football season with a convincing 35-7 victory over Paul Dunbar of Lexington in the Joe Jaggers Classic at North Hardin High.

    Jonathan Bernard led the ground attack with 168 yards, including touchdown runs of 72 and 2 yards. See game details in Monday's edition of The Pioneer News, your only source for in-depth coverage of every game in the football season.

  • Bullitt East 'ACE'...

    Bullitt East volleyball coach Michelle Gajdik saw a 100 percent increase in the number of campers she had this summer for her annual camp at the school.

    There were 46 players taking part this season.

    The young players worked on the fundamentals of the game with hitting, serving and blocking drills.

    There was even a group of kindergarten age players taking part, working with larger balls on correct form.

    The high school volleyball season starts in two weeks.

  • Golf season kicks off fall...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The calendar may have just flipped to August, but the 2009-2010 high school sports season kicks off this week with the start of the golf season.

    Locally, all three high schools plan to have both boys’ and girls’ teams this fall. While some of the boys’ teams will start today, the highlight of the first week will come on Wednesday when all three teams converge on Heritage Hill Golf Course for the Bullitt East Charger Open. There will be 20 teams taking part in that event.

  • North Oldham runs away with...

    SHEPHERDSVILLE - The North Oldham boys’ golf team ran off and hid last Wednesday in the Bullitt East Charger Open at Heritage Hill Golf Course.

    North Oldham finished with a 298 to easily outdistance Manual’s top team that tied with Greenup County for second with a 307 total. Manual was the defending champion.

    Manual and North Oldham were also at the top of the individual results. Manual Akash Mirchandani and North Oldham’s James Wistrom tied for low medalist as each fired a 68 over the par-72 lay-out.

  • Local players part of national...

    The Louisville Lady Sluggers 12U fastpitch softball travel team recently went undefeated to win three Kentucky State Tournaments to qualify for Nationals/World Series of their choice in Florida, Indiana, Tennessee, Illinois or Wisconsin.

    On June 27-28, 2009, in Fort Knox, the Lady Sluggers won the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) KY State Tournament.

    On July 3-5, in Lexington, the Lady Sluggers won the National Softball Association (NSA) KY State Tournament.

  • Final Summer Hoops Binge

    With school set to start this week and the youth football season already in full swing, the final week of the summer hoops camp circuit saw activities at both Zoneton Middle School and Mount Washington Middle School recently.

    Zoneton’s camp, under the director of coach Casey Bannon, had almost 100 players for four days of drills.

    The Mount Washington camp, run by Jeff Phelps, was for middle school students and had over 30 players taking part.

    HEBRON ESTATES -- Alice Lloyd assistant baseball coach Gary Hammons was as surprised as anyone when he learned that the son of a player he coached during his long tenure as the coach at Knott County Central was available on the recruiting trail.

  • Dustin Linville Nabs NASRA Jerry...

    BARDSTOWN - C.J. Rayburn’s National All Star Racing Assocition would make its first ever visit to Bluegrass Speedway on Saturday evening and Dustin Linville of Bryantsville, KY would park his machine in victory lane as the winner of the 30 lap, $3,000 to win Jerry Ross Memorial event.  Other feature winners for the evening included Johnny Cecil of Bardstown, KY in Street Stocks and Avral Thompson of Loretto, KY in WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman.

     

  • Grand Slam! St. Catharine signs...

    HEBRON ESTATES - Both North Bullitt baseball coach Brian Wise and St. Catharine College coach Luther Bramblett felt like they hit grand slams on Tuesday when four Eagle players signed to continue their careers at the Springfield, Kentucky school.

    The event might have been the first time any one program in Bullitt County has sent that many players to the same college at one time. Overall, six Eagle seniors from last year’s team have accepted offers to play at the next level.
