BARDSTOWN - The O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass DirtCar Series presented by Graphic Impressions invaded Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, KY for the second time in 2009 and David Webb of Nicholasville, KY would start 15th, but finish first and would collect the $3,000 payday at the David and Anita Ferrell promoted venues 8th Annual June Jam.  Other feature winners for the evening included Shane Lafollette of Hodgenville, KY winning his first-ever Street Stock main event and Jason Wheatley of Loretto, KY winning his third Modified feature of ’09 at the ½ mile clay ova

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Bullitt County had a multiple state champion for the first time in over 20 years.

Add to the that the fact that Bullitt County had its first-ever one-two finish in the same event.

Yes, the 2009 Kentucky State Track and Field Championships was a good weekend for the most part. Both of the Bullitt East track teams scored team points as did the North Bullitt girls.

(Scoring was done on a 5-3-2-1 basis in individual events and 5-3 in the relays. Only those athletes scoring points in each event are listed. No school could claim more than two spots in the top four finishers.)

    BOYS:

Team Scores - Bullitt East 106; North Bullitt 44, Bullitt Central 13.

110-Meter High Hurdles: Jacob Duvall, BE, 17.32; Chris Pate, NB, 19.32.

  • Three local teams score state...

LOUISVILLE - Bullitt East sprint standout Bobby Harrison stood on the infield grass at the University of Louisville track on Friday night with three medals hanging around his neck.

For most athletes in Kentucky, it would have been an electric moment. For Harrison it was really the end of a frustrating day that saw him come up short of some of his goals, namely a state championship in either the 100- or 200-meter dashes or the 4 X 100-meter relay.

Instead, the senior finished fifth in the 200, and sixth in the 100 while the relay team was fourth.

  • 2009 Regional Track and Field...

LOUISVILLE - Bullitt East junior Jackie Stevens was such a big favorite to bring home two titles from Friday’s Kentucky State Track and Field Championships that it put added pressure on her to live up to the high expectations.

Just put it down as mission accomplished.

Stevens won both the girls’ Class AA discus and the shot put at the University of Louisville, giving Bullitt East its first state track titles since 1988. The junior had top three finishes in both events last season.

  • First inning uprising sends East...

LEXINGTON - Everybody thinks it and dreams it, but nobody expects it to come true.

But the dreams did become true for the Bullitt East Chargers in the first round of the Forcht Bank/Kentucky State Baseball Tournament on Thursday when the red and gold sent 14 batters to the plate and scored ten runs in the first inning. It was smooth sailing from that point as Bullitt East beat South Laurel 16-5, advancing to Friday’s semi-finals against Owensboro.

  • Saturday is a special day to the...

HODGENVILLE - You have to love it when baseball players make the most of a second chance.

The post-season in 2009 has been filled with Bullitt East players not hanging their heads after making miscues in early situations. They kept their heads up and when the opportunity came around for redemption they were prepared.

There isn’t a coach alive that hasn’t told his players, normally more than once, that you can’t change the past, you can only affect the future. Bullitt East players have done that consistently over the past two weeks.

  • To The BIG SHOW - BE heads to...

HODGENVILLE - Not storms, nor cold bats, nor even a graduation could stop the Bullitt East Chargers from winning the Section III Baseball Tournament last week at LaRue County High School.

The final piece of the puzzle came on Saturday night when the red and gold rode the pitching arm of Brandon Alphin to the title in the best-of-three series against Elizabethtown, winning the third game 6-0. The junior allowed only three hits and only one Panther runner reached third base.

  • Big Blast - Whitmer's HR...

LOUISVILLE - Dreams really do come true.

A thousand times before, Bullitt East junior Josh Whitmer had dreamed about stepping to the plate at the end of a big game. Each of those times, the big left-handed hitter came through in the clutch.

On Thursday, it was the real deal. Bottom of the ninth, two outs and the game tied at 6-6 in the championship game of the Sixth Region Tournament. No problem.

  • NB's Cissell to play in...

HEBRON ESTATES - Former North Bullitt football standout Dalton Cissell will play on Friday in the Kentucky East-West All-Star game at L.T. Smith Stadium at Western Kentucky University.

There was some confusion back in March when the original rosters were announced. Cissell, the ninth-leading rusher in Kentucky history, was not part of the team. That oversight was corrected and Cissell will wear number 21 on Friday in his final high school football game before heading to the University of Louisville as a preferred walk-on.
