  • Rain, prom win Charger Challenge

MOUNT WASHINGTON - The eighth week of the high school baseball season had more frustration than success for the Bullitt East Chargers last week as they got to play just two games.

Most of the frustration came over the weekend as the team ended up playing just one game in the Charger Challenge, an event that head coach Jeff Bowles put together to showcase four of the top baseball programs in the state.

In the end, Trinity, Harrison County and Lexington Catholic each got to take a crack at each other while Bullitt East pretty much sat on the sideline.

  • North wins 3 of 4 and gets...

HEBRON ESTATES -- Unlike just about every other team in the area last week, the North Bullitt Eagles came close to playing a full schedule, managing to get in four games with three of those being victories.

The only setback came on Saturday when the Eagles dropped a 5-4 decision to Oldham County in the first game of a four-team tournament at Kentucky Country Day. The green and gold rebounded later in the afternoon to take third place with an 11-1 victory over Portland Christian.

  • 24th District Softball: Early...

FAIRDALE - It was worth the wait.

Forced to stand around for over an hour waiting for umpires, the Bullitt Central Lady Cougars unleashed that pent-up energy with seven runs over the first two innings as they rolled past Fairdale 8-1 on Monday in the first game of the 24th District Softball Tournament.

The victory moved Bullitt Central into Tuesday’s semi-finals where the maroon and gray were to play top-seeded North Bullitt.

Bullitt Central had beaten Fairdale 10-3 in their only meeting during the regular season.

  • BE boys roll; North, East tie...

MOUNT WASHINGTON - At the end of Tuesday’s All-Bullitt County Track and Field Championships at Bullitt East, North Bullitt track coach Mike Whitfill, who shares the duties with Lindsey Wegley, was left talking about what might have been after his girls’ team appeared to lose the meet by a single point.

Two days later, after Bullitt East track coach Lenny Raley had gone back over the scoring, it was learned that the Lady Eagles had indeed pulled off a minor miracle, scoring enough points to tie the Lady Chargers 66 to 66. Bullitt Central was third with 26 points.

  • 24th District Baseball: Pitchers...

FAIRDALE - If a person had not seen a single Bullitt Central baseball game all season, watching Monday’s District opener against Fairdale would have been a perfect illustration of a frustrating year.

The Cougars got good pitching but little offense in a 2-1 setback to the host Bulldogs. The loss closed out the Bullitt Central season with a 5-18 mark.

“This game was a mirror image of our entire season,” coach Tommy Alvey said following the loss. “The pitching has kept us in the ball games but we just haven’t been able to hit the ball.”

  • Scholarship in honor of Ennis

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Charles “Chuck” Ennis III had a very successful career in the military.

But his dream was to someday go back to college and earn his bachelor’s degree.

Unfortunately, on Jan. 29, 2008, Ennis was returning home from college when another vehicle crossed the center line. The son of Danny and Sandy Ennis died at the scene.

  • NB's Schott signs to...

LOUISVILLE - North Bullitt senior Sara Schott got the best of both worlds last week when she signed to attend Midway College in Midway, Ky.

On one hand, she will get to continue playing volleyball for a program that is trying to rebuild itself under third-year head coach Cindy Cheatham. At the same time, she gets to follow her dream to major in accounting. It also didn’t hurt that Midway is not too far away from home.

  • Cougars win a game, but then...

SHEPHERDSVILLE - The Bullitt Central Cougars picked up one win last week, but for the most part the maroon and gray struggled with poor fielding which overshadowed some strong pitching and improved hitting.

The week started with a 14-4 loss to Fairdale. The outcome means that the two teams will meet in the first round of the 24th District Tournament which will be played at Fairdale this season. Fairdale will have the number four seed while Bullitt Central will be the number five team.
