  • Regional tennis team play starts

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- Few matches remain as tennis teams gear up for regional action on May 9.

Bullitt East boys’ team will compete this week in the regional competition for the seven-member squads.

In girls’ competition, Bullitt Central and North Bullitt will both compete on Monday in regional team championships.

    Individual play is next week.

North Bullitt avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to Bullitt East on Monday.

The host Eagles reversed the score.

  • Roach seeking new programs to...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Sometimes at the high school level, coaches and programs just need a change of scenery.

A different point of view on how things should be done.

With that in mind, Bullitt Central Lady Cougar head coach Kyle Roach stepped down from his position recently after four seasons at the helm. Roach is not closing the door on coaching again, perhaps even soon, but he felt that a new perspective was needed for all involved.

  • Lee steps down after 11 seasons

SHEPHERDSVILLE – There was really no surprise, but there was a lot of emotion last week when Bullitt Central basketball coach Joe Pat Lee announced that he was stepping down after 11 years at the helm of the program for which he once played.

Lee had been thinking about making the move much earlier. The decision was actually made for him when he was named a new assistant principal at the school. The Bullitt County Board of Education does not allow principals to be coaches.

  • East drops first game, but ready...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Nobody expected the Bullitt East Lady Chargers to go undefeated this season.

Plus, being up 6-0 midway through the fifth inning on Wednesday, nobody thought that the red and gold, ranked fifth in the state, would lose.

But the team did lose on Wednesday, falling 8-7 at Martha Layne Collins. So, when the second point came true, the first one was out the window as the Lady Chargers lost for the first time after 16 straight wins to open the season.

  • BC, NB heading on a collision...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – The showdown is all but set for the Bullitt Central and North Bullitt softball programs as the two programs head to a clash next Monday at North Bullitt for the top spot in the 23rd District Tournament.

Bullitt Central already has lopsided wins over both Moore and Southern, by a combined 31-0 count. North Bullitt pounded Moore last week and will face Southern on Wednesday.

  • 10-inning classic finally goes...

HEBRON ESTATES – The play wasn’t always perfect, but there was never a dull moment on Saturday as Bullitt East and North Bullitt waged a titanic struggle before the Chargers pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 7-5 victory.

The battle between two of the top teams in the Sixth Region will be the only regular season meeting between the old rivals. Three of the past seven Sixth Region titles have been won by these two programs, including the last two by North Bullitt.

  • McKinley, Klefot ‘perfect’ in 10...

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Bullitt East seniors Kyle McKinley and Brandon Klefot needed just 42 pitches on Thursday to record a perfect game as the Chargers rolled past 24th District foe Fern Creek 10-0.

That was the first of three straight wins for Bullitt East last week. The Chargers also beat Fairdale 9-6 on Saturday before they beat North Bullitt 7-5 in a 10-inning classic (see story above).

  • Frustrating week for Central...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – It has just been on of those baseball seasons for the Bullitt Central Cougars.

Coach G.J. Moore’s team has been competitive, starting this week with an 8-14 mark. It has just been that the Cougars can’t win the tight games. Five of the 14 losses have been by one or two runs. Worse, both of the losses within the 23rd District, have been by a single run -- 3-2 to Moore and 2-1 last Tuesday to Southern.

  • Three area teams in new format...

LOUISVILLE -- For years, the regional tennis tournament has determined individual players who would advance to the state tournament.

The cumulative team scores from the individual matches would determine which squad would also advance to a separate state competition.

This year, the rules have changed.

A separate team competition will be held in the 16 regions with the winning squads advancing to a state tournament.

For Sixth Region teams, that will be conducted the week of May 2.

  • Tennis season nears regional...

SHEPHERDSVILLE -- The matches are winding down for local tennis teams as regional competition is just around the corner.

Bullitt East will participate in the Sixth Region boys’ team competition. The other two schools opted to not participate.

In the girls’ competition, both North Bullitt and Bullitt Central will participate.

All six schools will participate in the individual competition, which starts on May 9.
