  • Early goals are enough for BE...

HEBRON ESTATES – A huge week for girls’ soccer within the Sixth Region ended on Thursday with Bullitt East traveling to North Bullitt and pulling out a 2-1 victory.

The win by the Lady Chargers came three days after they had lost to Mercy by the same score.

Over the past three seasons, Mercy and Bullitt East have met for the Sixth Region title with North Bullitt reaching the semi-finals each of those years only to fall to the Chargers.

  • Last big bounce favors Central

MOUNT WASHINGTON – Rare are the times when a soccer ball bounces over a goalie’s head and goes into the netting.

However, that event happened not once, but twice, on Wednesday in the only regular season meeting this season between Bullitt Central and Bullitt East. Each team scored a goal on the odd occurrence minutes apart in the second half.

It was the second one, with just 5:30 remaining in the game, when Bullitt Central scored, that ended up being the most important as the Cougars pulled out a 3-2 win.

  • Back-to-back! Chargers return to...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – All season long, Bullitt East boys’ golf coach Kyle Downs has been working with his team on how to handle themselves when they don’t get off to good starts in matches.

    It must have worked.

Down and trailing the top teams at the turn on Monday in the Fifth Region Tournament at Heritage Hill Golf Course, the Chargers battled back over the back nine and passed all the teams except Elizabethtown to claim the second and last qualifying spot for next week’s Kentucky State Golf Tournament in Bowling Green.

  • Road racing returns to Salem...

SALEM, Ind. – Road racing returns to Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 4th, as the second annual Redneck Enduro 100 on the Roval takes center stage on the tricky half-mile layout.

The 100-lap event for the Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive Stocks utilizes both the infield short-track and a portion of the half-mile high banks.  Drivers navigate the road course, which includes both left and right-hand turns, from the high banked track to the short-track and back.

  • Lots of fans missed a great game

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Yes, it was raining.

Yes, it was 34-14 at halftime.

And, yes, the Bullitt Central defense had given up 111 points over the previous six quarters.

Because of those facts, a lot of people missed the second half of a great football game on Friday night.

Bullitt Central rallied all the way back to take a 44-40 lead with 4:42 remaining in the game. For the previous 12 minutes of game time, the Cougars had dominated play.

  • Chargers end draught with win...

MOUNT WASHINGTON -- Did it rain on Friday night?

If you ask the Bullitt East football players and staff members, they may not know.

What they did know is that after a tough pre-district stretch, Bullitt East got the “real” season started with a fantastic 35-6 victory over Nelson County.

In a constant rain, the Charger defense completely snuffed out the Cardinal offense.

The visitors had only 71 yards in total offense, including a minus three on 21 rushing attempts.

  • Classic!! Duel in the Rain goes...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Trailing for the first time all night with just 4:42 remaining in the 40th renewal of The Game, the North Bullitt Eagles didn’t panic and they didn’t try to get fancy.

  • Pair of 4-1 teams set to clash...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – There will be even more than normal on the line Friday when North Bullitt and Bullitt Central collide in the 40th renewal of The Game.

The county rivalry angle has always been powerful in this series, but this year the district and play-off implication also come into play at a greater importance.

  • Youth football teams pass midway...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Once again this season, The Pioneer news will run the results from the Greater Bullitt County Youth Football League in each Wednesday edition during the season.

The statistics used each week are provided to the newspaper by the league and the individual teams. Questions about yardage, scoring and tackles should be directed to the league and those teams.

  • Lady Chargers stay hot; beat BC...

SHEPHERDSVILLE – Five days after sweeping past North Bullitt, the Bullitt East Lady Chargers did it again last Tuesday as they beat Bullitt Central without dropping a game.

That was just the tip of the iceberg for coach Ed Fisher’s team last week as it went on to beat district rival Fern Creek on Thursday before heading to New Castle over the weekend and capturing the Henry County Varsity Tournament with four straight wins. In the tournament, the red and gold lost just one game.
