LOUISVILLE - The Bullitt East Lady Chargers went on the road Tuesday to open the 2010-2011 season and came away with a hard-earned 54-46 victory over an improved Pleasure Ridge Park squad.
As will be the case for the Lady Chargers most of this season, they pounded the ball inside and got 28 combined points from post players Lindey Young and Meredith Polson. Both of the seniors finished with double-doubles as Young collected 18 points and 15 rebounds while Polson posted 10 points and 11 rebounds.
“It was a great opener,” Bullitt East head coach Chris Stallings said later in the week. “It was a great game.
“We gave up too many offensive rebounds to PRP, but it was a good way to start the season with a Sixth Region win on the road,” the coach added.
PRP is one of the few teams in the Sixth Region with enough height inside to contest Bullitt East and the 6-2 Young. The Lady Panthers have a pair of inside post players over 6-feet tall.
While the final score was close, Bullitt East actually won the scoring battle in each of the four quarters. The Lady Chargers led 11-8 after the first quarter and pushed that to 22-17 at halftime. The lead grew to as many as 12 points in the second half only to have PRP cut it to four points down the stretch.
Bullitt East secured the win by hitting free throws down the stretch. The red and gold were seven of nine at the charity stripe over the final eight minutes and were 18 of 22 for the game. Junior Nikole Isabel made all six of her free throw chances in the game.
Isabel added 14 points in the game for the Lady Chargers.
Bullitt East made just a pair of three-pointers while the Lady Panthers drained seven of the long shots.
“I was pleased to come out with a win,” Stallings said. “They (PRP) have gotten a lot better. They have a strong inside game. I felt we did a good job clogging things up.”
Senior Emily Hibbs led PRP with 14 points while sophomore Kelsey Adwell finished with 11 points.
Pleasure Ridge Park is coached by former Bernheim Middle School head coach and Bullitt Central assistant coach ‘Buddy’ Fluhr who is in his fifth season coaching the Lady Panthers. PRP went 11-15 last season and lost in the first round of the Sixth Region Tournament.
After playing Bullitt Central last Friday (see story in Wednesday’s edition), Bullitt East will be back in action at home on Tuesday when they take on Butler in a rematch of last season’s Sixth Region championship game that Butler won 48-43.

BULLITT EAST 54 (11-11-13-19) Courtney Pfister 2, Nikole Isabel 14, Whitney Stansbury 5, Sable Logsdon 3, Taylor Blain 2, Meredith Polson 10, Lindey Young 18.
    PLEASURE RIDGE PARK 46 (8-9-12-17) Roeder 1, Kuban 2, Murphy 3, Adwell 11, Hibbs 14, Stewart 4, Hart 7, McClain 4.
